The Teacher of the Deaf provides services as determined by the student's IEP and will work with a range of students who differ in age and mode of communication. This position collaborates with staff and families to support access and advocacy for students experiencing hearing loss.Required Qualifications: Ability to communicate effectively, possess awareness of self and others, listen actively, be patient, incorporate humor/lightheartedness into work, be empathic, possess a growth mindset, and be customer-service oriented Master's degree in Deaf Education or related degree Possession of a valid Washington State Teaching certificate Possession of an endorsement in Special Education K-12 Working knowledge of Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) and Social Emotional Learning (SEL) best practices Knowledge of all phases of the special education process, procedures, and disability categories Fluency in both American Sign Language (ASL) and written English Knowledge of Deaf Culture and community Experience working with students who are deaf and hard of hearing Ability to communicate effectively with students who are deaf and hard of hearing, school staff, parents, and school district personnel using ASL and English. Ability to establish and maintain a professional relationship with students Ability to act in an ethical and confidential manner in all aspects of employmentAll Students Achieve Academic and Personal Excellence Ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodationsPreferred Qualifications: Experience or training in a school for the deaf At least five years of successful special education teacher experience in this role Experience working with students from diverse backgroundsEssential Functions: Provide in-service training to administrators, support staff, teachers and parents regarding the characteristics and educational implications of hearing loss Work collaboratively with building staff to monitor the impact the hearing loss may have on the student's educational progress Pre-teach, reinforce, or reteach content area vocabulary and concepts where language deficiencies hinder understanding Modify curriculum and materials according to the individual needs of the student Create lessons in self-advocacy and other subjects included in the IEP Observe the student in the classroom to evaluate attending skills, communication repair strategies, use and effectiveness of equipment, access to instruction, and accommodations Ability to problem-solve student hearing technology issues and collaborate regarding solutions Ability to use technology to communicate, report progress, assess, and write IEPs and evaluation reports Evaluate students' progress through formal and informal assessments Monitor students' audiological needs Assist in the development of student IEPs Provides instruction for students in the identified area(s) of need, per the IEP Maintains records and data on student progress toward meeting the goal area identified in the IEP Designs and implements activities in various school settings related to the student's IEP Implement behavior intervention programs and emergency response protocols Motivates, redirects student behavior, and interacts with students in a productive manner Delivers rigor in content-driven lessons and, when appropriate, provides individual and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of students with varying intellectual abilities, attitudes, and cultural backgrounds Participates in curriculum development and implementation of special education services Administers, scores, interprets, and writes analysis of standardized and curriculum-based assessments (CBA) and verbally reports those interpretations in IEP meetings and at evaluations Uses collaborative and evidence-based approaches to assist in the creation of IEPs to ensure that students receive skills targeted to their areas of identified need Responds to inquiries from a variety of sources (e.g., other teachers, parents, administrators, etc.) around aspects of special education services Stays current on policies and laws related to special educationAll Students Achieve Academic and Personal Excellence Completes all documentation as required by law or prescribed by the Executive Director of Special Services, including but not limited to IEPs, assessment documents, and progress reporting Attends staff and other professional meetings as appropriate or directed Uses and integrates technology for communication and instruction Other duties as assignedSalary: $15,542.36-$31,122.53 Depending on experienceWork schedule: .2 FTE 1 day per week, 7.5 hours per day. 8:30 a.m.- 4:00 p.m.Benefits: Prorated sick leave and personal leave days.
