Principal Engineering Geologist
Location: Carlsbad, California (On-site)
Job Type: Full-Time
We are seeking an experienced Principal Engineering Geologist to join a growing geotechnical and engineering consulting team in Carlsbad, California. This is a leadership opportunity for a licensed professional who is passionate about engineering geology, geotechnical investigations, and mentoring technical teams while working on diverse land development and infrastructure projects.
Key Responsibilities
Lead and manage geologic and geotechnical site investigations for a variety of commercial, residential, and infrastructure projects.
Plan, coordinate, and oversee field investigations, including drilling, test pits, subsurface exploration, sampling, logging, grading observations, and geologic mapping.
Interpret geological and geotechnical data to develop subsurface models and engineering recommendations.
Prepare and review technical reports, including foundation recommendations, slope stability evaluations, earthwork recommendations, and geologic hazard assessments.
Coordinate with project managers, engineers, clients, contractors, and regulatory agencies throughout the project lifecycle.
Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior geologists and field staff.
Support project planning, proposal preparation, budgeting, quality assurance, and technical reviews.
Ensure compliance with applicable safety standards, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Geological Engineering, or a related discipline. Master’s degree preferred.
Licensed Certified Engineering Geologist (CEG) in California, or eligible to obtain licensure within a reasonable timeframe.
Strong experience in engineering geology, geologic mapping, hazard evaluation, and interpretation of subsurface conditions.
Proven expertise in geotechnical engineering applications, including foundation design recommendations, slope stability, and earthwork evaluations.
Extensive experience planning and supervising site investigations, drilling programs, test pits, sampling, and in-situ testing.
Strong knowledge of boring logs, soil and rock classification, and subsurface data interpretation.
Experience supporting land development, transportation, and civil infrastructure projects.
Excellent technical writing, communication, and client management skills.
Proficiency with industry-standard geology and geotechnical software.
Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while leading multidisciplinary teams.
