Certified Medical Assistant 2 Sign On Bonus: $5,000 The University of Miami/UHealth Department of SCCC has an exciting opportunity for a Full Time Certified Medical Assistant 2 to work at the UHealth Medical Campus. The Medical Assistant (MA) 2 will perform multi-skilled tasks to assist the medical providers.

Responsibilities: The MA 2 shall assist patients' healthcare management and clinical procedures in a culturally competent manner utilizing evidence-based standards of quality, safety, and service. The MA 2 provides hands-on care to patients while adhering to regulatory requirements, standards of care, and institutional policies and procedures, under the direct supervision and responsibility of a licensed physician.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist patients' healthcare management and clinical procedures
  • Provide hands-on care to patients
  • Adhere to regulatory requirements, standards of care, and institutional policies and procedures
  • Work directly with the Nurse Manager/Nurse Supervisor/Charge Nurse and/or the Designee in charge of the Unit or Clinic to ensure a safe delivery of care that supports the UHealth mission

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of basic medical terminology
  • Assist providers with physical examinations
  • Understand the importance of medical and surgical asepsis
  • Prepare patients for physician's care with basic instruction and information regarding examination procedures
  • Perform routine laboratory tests
  • Perform vital signs, EKG, phlebotomy, and document in patient's medical record
  • Observe and report patient's signs or symptoms changes
  • Administer medication safely as directed by the physician
  • Assist in patient care activities such as walking
  • Escort and transport patients to various hospital locations
  • Clean and/or sterilize medical instruments while observing principles of sterile technique
  • Schedule patients for tests and completes required forms for laboratory work
  • Provide patient with provider's care instructions and information
  • Maintain accurate and complete patient records and documentation
  • Order, stock, and inventories supplies, and assists in performing clerical duties
  • Adhere to University and unit-level Policies & Procedures and safeguards University's assets

Department Specific Functions: Patient Triage

  • Independently triage patients, including but not limited to:
  • Assisting patient with e-check-in
  • Managing the clinic schedule (add/remove patients as needed)
  • Obtaining and documenting vital signs
  • Verifying and updating pharmacy information
  • Collecting and documenting:
  • Medication reconciliation
  • Medical, surgical, and family histories
  • Smoking, alcohol, drug, and sexual histories
  • Other
  • Clinic flow
  • Work with LPN to ensure all patient appointments are confirmed either the day before scheduled appointment or morning of appointment
  • Educate patients about the importance of completing e-check-in during these calls
  • Communicate with APP & LPN in secure chat during clinic day
  • Inventory management, ensure supplies is stocked
  • Be onsite for clinic at fire station on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
  • Be in the office on Monday and Friday as needed to collect supplies, complete admin tasks

Screenings and Diagnostics

  • Perform screening tests (vision, hearing, spirometry) and EKGs independently
  • Maintain login credentials for all relevant diagnostic tools (e.g., EKG, audiogram)
  • Troubleshoot equipment issues and locate user manuals as needed

Laboratory Duties

  • Phlebotomy
  • Demonstrate competency in blood draw techniques
  • Specimen Handling
  • Navigate the Quest Diagnostics portal to confirm correct collection containers and storage requirements for all lab specimens

Communication & Documentation

  • Assist with inputting patient data into Smartsheets, updating each clinical day
  • Navigate Excell spreadsheets
  • Check the following platforms regularly Monday-Friday throughout the day:
  • Epic In-Basket
  • Epic Secure Chat
  • UM email

Team Participation & Reporting

  • Drive FCI van - while not a core responsibility, will need to be competent in case driving is needed
  • Occasional weekend work for events

Clinical Operations Meetings

  • Attend all mandatory Monday and Friday clinical operations meetings
  • Update agenda items that pertain to your role and be prepared to present them

Core Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Graduate from an approved Medical Assistant educational program recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (USDE)
  • Note: (If MA presently has, an active MA certification, school verification and exceptions may apply.)

Certification and Licensing:

  • Approved MA Certifications:
  • CMA- Certified Medical Assistant - American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA)®
  • RMA- Registered Medical Assistant - American Medical Technologists (AMT)
  • CCMA- Certified Clinical Medical Assistant- National Healthcare Association (NHA)
  • NCMA - National Certified Medical Assistant (NHA - NCCT)
  • NRCMA - Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant (NAHP)
  • Additional certification: American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) for healthcare providers
  • HIV & AIDS Certification: Florida HIV/AIDS Healthcare Professional Continue Education (CE) Certification

Experience:

  • Minimum of 2 years previous experience
  • Additional clerical experience preferred

  • Strong, effective communication skills with patients, families, and clinical team
  • Adapt to firefighter specific needs
  • Ability to adapt and exhibit flexibility to handle new, different, or changing environments and plans
