Certified Medical Assistant- Allergy

Clinical Duties Must be able to administer shots Experience in allergy (minimum of 2 year) • Room patients and record vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, temperature, weight, oxygen saturation). • Obtain and document medical histories, current symptoms, medications, and allergies. • Prepare patients for examination by the allergist. • Assist the provider during office visits and procedures. • Perform allergy skin prick and intradermal testing according to provider orders and clinic protocols. • Prepare and administer allergy immunotherapy (allergy shots), if permitted by state law and under provider supervision. • Observe patients after allergy injections for adverse reactions and respond appropriately in emergencies. • Recognize signs and symptoms of severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, and assist with emergency treatment. • Perform spirometry (lung function testing) and other pulmonary function tests. • Collect specimens (such as blood or nasal swabs) as ordered. • Administer medications, injections, and vaccines within the scope of practice. • Clean, sterilize, and prepare examination rooms and medical equipment. • Maintain infection control and safety standards. Administrative Duties • Schedule appointments, allergy testing, and immunotherapy visits. • Verify insurance coverage and obtain prior authorizations for medications, testing, or biologic therapies. • Answer patient phone calls and respond to messages regarding medications, allergy shot schedules, and treatment questions. • Document patient encounters accurately in the electronic health record (EHR). • Coordinate referrals to specialists or diagnostic testing. • Order and maintain medical supplies and medications. • Assist with patient check-in/check-out as needed. Patient Education • Educate patients on allergy testing procedures and what to expect. • Teach patients about environmental allergen avoidance strategies. • Provide instructions for medications, including antihistamines, inhalers, nasal sprays, and epinephrine auto-injectors. • Explain allergy shot schedules, follow-up appointments, and observation requirements after injections. • Reinforce asthma action plans and emergency response instructions when appropriate. Skills Needed • Strong knowledge of allergies, asthma, and immunology. • Ability to recognize and respond quickly to allergic emergencies. • Excellent communication and patient education skills. • Attention to detail for medication preparation and documentation. • Competence with EHR systems and medical office procedures. • Strong organizational and time-management skills. • Compassion and professionalism when working with pediatric and adult patients.
