Overview

The Certified Medical Assistant / Registered Medical Assistant performs routine administrative and patient care support duties in a medical practice to assist medical and/or nursing staff in the examination and treatment of patients and ensures that the office runs smoothly.

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days - American Heart Association (AHA)
  • Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) (ARMA) - American Registry of Medical Assistants (ARMA)
  • Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) (AAH) - American Allied Health (AAH)
  • Certified Medical Assistant (NCCT) - National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT)
  • Education: H.S. Diploma/GED

Responsibilities

  • Room patients and collect pertinent information, including chief complaint, family history, social history, surgical history, allergies, and medication reconciliation.
  • Obtain and document vital signs, including weight, height, blood pressure, pulse, and pulse oximetry for patients ages 18-150.
  • Conduct pre-visit telephone calls to complete medication reconciliation and verify allergies and patient history.
  • Perform medication reconciliation, including prescription, over-the-counter, and supplemental medications.
  • Complete telephone communications with patients, families, pharmacies, and healthcare facilities in accordance with department policies and provider direction.
  • Gather, maintain, and document patient information through telephone interactions using department-specific processes and EMR systems.
  • Perform administrative duties including patient check-in, check-out, appointment scheduling, benefit verification, prior authorizations, referral coordination, and diagnostic testing coordination.
  • Assist patients with completion of medical and administrative forms.
  • Perform office procedures in accordance with provider direction and departmental competencies.
  • Conduct point-of-care diagnostic testing and maintain competency in specialized equipment and procedures.
  • Perform urine catheterizations, bladder scanning, suture removal, staple removal, and cast application/removal as directed by providers.
  • Read and document negative TB skin test results and refer patients to nursing staff when findings indicate a possible positive result.
  • Administer medications and treatments as ordered by providers.
  • Administer immunizations, PPD tests, nebulizer treatments, and oral medications for patients ages 18-150.
  • Assist with prescription refill requests following department protocols and provider orders.
  • Communicate prescription orders to pharmacies, notify patients of refill status, and document all actions within the EMR.
  • Provide patients with written instructions regarding procedures, medications, and follow-up care as directed by providers.
  • Retrieve and distribute condition-specific patient education materials from approved internet, internal, and printed resources per provider instructions.
  • Maintain department-specific competencies related to point-of-care testing, equipment handling, and specialty training requirements.
  • Collaborate with assigned providers to maintain and update Team-Based Care binders.
  • Ensure accurate and timely documentation of patient care activities, communications, and provider-directed interventions within the EMR.

Compensation and Benefits

The compensation range for this position is $18.33per hour - $29.69per hour. This represents a good faith minimum and maximum range for the role at the time of posting by Carle Health. The actual compensation offered a candidate will be dependent on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate's experience, qualifications, location, training, licenses, shifts worked and compensation model.
