Summary of Duties:  The Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) plays a vital role in supporting the healthcare team by providing clinical and administrative assistance to healthcare providers. The CMA ensures smooth patient flow, performs basic clinical tasks, and assists in managing patient records, helping to deliver high-quality patient care.



Primary Responsibilities:

Patient Care:  Prepare patients for examinations, take vital signs (e.g., temperature, blood pressure, pulse, and respiration), and record medical history.
  • Assist healthcare providers during examinations and procedures.
  • Administer injections, prepare and collect lab specimens, and perform basic laboratory tests (if certified).
  • Educate patients on medical procedures, medications, and aftercare instructions.
Administrative Duties:  Greet patients and handle patient intake, including verifying personal and insurance information.
  • Schedule appointments, manage patient files, and maintain accurate medical records using electronic health record (EHR) systems.
  • Handle correspondence, billing, and coding for insurance purposes.
  • Answer phones, address patient inquiries, and follow up with patients regarding lab results and treatment plans. 
Clinical Assistance:  Prepare and maintain examination rooms, including sanitizing equipment and stocking medical supplies.
  • Assist with minor office surgeries, procedures, and dressing wounds.
  • Draw blood and administer vaccinations, depending on certifications and state regulations
Collaboration:  Work closely with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to provide patient care.
  • Ensure smooth communication between patients, healthcare providers, and other administrative staff.
  • And any other tasks, assignments, projects, or requests as deemed by management as assigned.

EXPERIENCE: 
  • Minimum of 1–3-year work experience in a healthcare setting involving patient care.  
  • Bilingual Spanish optional.


SKILLS:
  • Strong working knowledge of chronic disease including but not limited to chronic kidney disease, diabetes mellitus, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and congestive heart failure and basic medical management.
  • Must be highly motivated, result-oriented with strong skills in presenting, communicating, organizing, multi-tasking and time management skills
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent customer service skills demonstrated by positive feedback from patients/team.
  • Ability to identify problems and recommend solutions
  • Ability to read, write and communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Basic computer skills including previous work with an electronic health record (EHR)

ENVIRONMENTAL/ WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Combination of medical office and exam / procedure room setting, which is a well-lit, well-ventilated, adequate space.
 
PHYSICAL/ MENTAL DEMANDS: 

  • Must be able to use appropriate body mechanics techniques when making necessary patient transfers and helping patients with walking, dressing, etc.  Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds.
  • Hearing / Speaking: Effective communications with patients, staff and visitors.
  • Standing: 40% of the workday
  • Sitting: 20% of the workday
  • Walking: 30% of the workday
  • Lifting: 10% of the workday
  • Candidate must be able to pass a drug screen
  • Possess strong team values: collaboration, transparency, and open communication
