Title: Medical Assistant

Salary: $21 per hour

Supervisor: Nursing Supervisor

Status: Full-Time, Non-Exempt, 40 hours weekly

Location:Hybrid role with a mix of remote work and community-based travel within Dutchess County

Function:

The Medical Assistant (MA) helps to assist with the needs of our clients and contributes to a positive patient care experience and work environment. The MA should be an empathic individual with competent observational, clinical, critical thinking, communication, problem-solving and decision-making skills. The MA provides coordinated care to a variety of patients and functions as part of the interdisciplinary care team by providing telephonic support to our clients. The MA also offers support to Psychiatrists, Psychiatric NPs, RNs, and Clinicians as well as coordinating care with clinic directors and front office team regarding behavioral health services.

Position Requirements:

  • High School Diploma.
  • Medical Assistant Certification.  
  • Experience working with persons in crisis is preferred.
  • Office experience and or experience using electronic medical records preferred.

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to work independently with strong sense of focus, task oriented.
  • Ability to work with culturally diverse individuals and communities with the ability to be culturally sensitive, appropriate, and non-judgmental.
  • Comprehends fundamental medical terminologies in medical care delivery.
  • Previous behavioral health care or medical assistant experience preferred.
  • Work well under pressure and maintain a consistently pleasant and professional demeanor when communicating with the public and staff.
  • Be able to maintain a calm and professional attitude even in the face of crisis and dramatic presentation.
  • Ensure that work assignments and information gathered from day-to-day work is not shared with anyone and protects all patient and agency information.
  • Is knowledgeable of and maintains HIPAA standards of privacy and confidentiality.
  • Strong interpersonal communication and written skills.
  • Adhere to agency policy, procedures, and the professional code of ethics.
  • Basic casework skills including experience with referrals and advocacy.

Position Responsibilities: Provides support to all Dutchess County providers (Psychiatrists, NPs, RNs, and Clinicians) in ensuring that we meet the comprehensive behavioral health needs of our clients. 

  • Provides office services such as printing, faxing, and mailing of documents.
  • May advocate, and coordinate services on behalf of patients with other providers.
  • Performs intake triage, vitals, and assists clients with health screenings as needed.
  • Provides support to BH Providers and coordinates psychotropic medication bridge requests or other issues related to clients receiving medications from the pharmacy.
  • Assists with prior authorization of psychotropic medications.
  • Performs other duties as deemed necessary by supervisors.
  • When needed and as appropriate assisting with telephonic coverage for offices in Ulster County.
  • Coordinate and arrange translation services for patient care.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support Family Services Mission, Vision, and Values.
  • Coordinates all logistic support to department, including supplies and equipment.
  • Regularly checking on medication samples to alert RN when more are needed or when expiration date is near.
  • Helps with lab orders, finding lab results, faxing lab orders, and adding on tests when needed.
  • Aids and sustains workflow expectations established by supervisor.
  • Tracks clients who need to be closed & assists with closing clients.
  • Creates seven-day letter, creating a note stating why a seven-day letter will be sent out, calling the client 3 days after the seven-day letter is sent, sending out a termination letter, making a termination note, making a discharge/transfer summary.
  • Fields calls from Case Managers, MDs, collaterals, ER department, hospital, probation officers & similar and provides appropriate information to providers to ensure community partners get information they need.
  • Documentation in EHR system of all interactions related to client care.
