Location: Riverhead, NY and float sites (Stony Brook and Commack) Position Type: Full-time Schedule: The hours vary- schedules change every 2 weeks. As early as 7:45am start and end time of 5pm. Generally 8 hour shifts with possibility of some OT.
Position Summary
We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Medical Assistant to join our fast-paced Dermatology practice. The Medical Assistant will provide clinical and administrative support to physicians, nurse practitioners, ensuring efficient patient flow, accurate documentation, and high-quality, patient-centered care in a busy outpatient setting.
Key Responsibilities
Travel reliably between the Stony Brook and Commack clinical sites based on scheduled practice needs.
Escort patients to examination rooms, verify patient identity, and prepare patients for visits, including sensitive total-body skin checks, while protecting patient privacy, dignity, and comfort.
Obtain and document chief complaints, medical and surgical histories, medication lists, and known allergies in the EHR under provider direction.
Measure and record baseline vital signs accurately according to clinic protocols.
Clean, sanitize, stock, and prepare examination and procedure rooms before, during, and after patient visits to maintain a safe, infection-controlled environment.
Set up surgical trays, biopsy supplies, and specialized instruments for dermatologic procedures (such as punch/shave biopsies, cryotherapy, excisions, and patch testing).
Assist physicians and clinical providers during examinations and in-office procedures under direct supervision and within the medical assistant scope of practice.
Act as a clinical scribe when directed, entering provider-dictated physical findings, diagnoses, treatment plans, and pathology requisitions into the EHR.
Package, label, document, and route pathology specimens, biopsy samples, and laboratory requisitions in compliance with standard operating procedures and chain-of-custody protocols.
Communicate provider-directed pre- and post-procedure instructions, wound-care protocols, and general visit logistics to patients and families.
Triage and route patient messages, prescription refill requests, and scheduling inquiries to the appropriate provider or clinical staff member.
Maintain strict patient confidentiality in compliance with HIPAA, OSHA, infection-control standards, and organizational policies.
Support administrative and front-office workflows, including appointment scheduling, patient check-in/out, and supply ordering as assigned.
Required Qualifications
High school diploma or GED equivalent.
Graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant training program, or equivalent clinical experience in an outpatient or ambulatory setting.
Minimum of 1 year of hands-on experience as a Medical Assistant in a medical office or specialty practice; direct dermatology or surgical office experience is strongly preferred.
Demonstrated ability to deliver compassionate, patient-centered care and foster a comforting environment during sensitive examinations.
Strong verbal and written communication skills, with a professional telephone and bedside manner.
Proven organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and multitask in a high-volume, fast-paced clinical setting.
High degree of dependability, punctuality, attention to detail, and emotional maturity.
Proficiency with electronic health record (EHR) systems, practice-management software, and standard computer applications.
High school diploma or GED required.
Graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant program.
Current New York State Medical Assistant certification/registration as required by state law.
Computer proficiency with experience using EMR/EHR systems.
