Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) - Special Education / Medically Fragile Classroom

Classification: Full-Time, Hourly / Non-Exempt (Follows standard academic calendar)
Compensation: $18.50 per hour
Job Summary
LaVille Community Schools is seeking a compassionate, skilled, and patient Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) to work in an instructional, support capacity within a specialized classroom environment at LaVille Jr./Sr. High School. The primary focus of this role is to provide intensive physical, daily living, and health monitoring support to medically fragile students (grades 7-12), allowing them to safely engage with academic material and thrive alongside their peers.
Operating under the clinical oversight of the Corporation School Nurse and in collaboration with the special education teaching team, the CNA will administer daily care routines with maximum dignity, confidentiality, and care.
Key Responsibilities
?? Medical & Clinical Monitoring Support
- Plan Implementation: Support the execution of medical directions detailed within student Individualized Healthcare Plans (IHPs) and Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
- Vigilant Observation: Maintain constant, active observation for patient-specific medical triggers, seizure activities, or acute respiratory distress. Promptly report any variations from a students medical baseline to the School Nurse and classroom teacher.
- Specialized Equipment Management: Assist students with utilizing and managing specialized medical/adaptive devices under appropriate nursing delegation (e.g., G-tube equipment, feeding pumps, braces, and mechanical lifts).
- Emergency Intervention: Maintain complete readiness to implement standard emergency procedures, seizure protocols, or basic first aid/CPR if a crisis occurs.
? Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) & Mobility Support
- Personal Care with Dignity: Assist adolescent students with personal hygiene needs, including specialized toileting, diapering, skin integrity monitoring, and menstrual care management.
- Ergonomic Mobility & Transfers: Safely lift, reposition, and transfer adolescent or young adult students between mats, changing tables, standers, and wheelchairs. Utilize correct mechanical lift operations and two-person lift strategies to prioritize student and personal safety.
- Nutritional and Feeding Assistance: Assist with specialized mealtime regimens, including monitoring for swallowing hazards, textures, and feeding tubes under direct nurse delegation.
?? Classroom & Administrative Support
- Academic Integration: Work as a team player with classroom educators to help students safely transition into physical, social, and academic settings (e.g., life-skills training, specialized electives).
- Confidential Recordkeeping: Keep careful, systematic records of daily health metrics, fluid/food intake, outputs, and behavior changes in accordance with FERPA and HIPAA standards.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
- Licensure: Valid and current registration as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) with the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency.
- Certifications: Active CPR, First Aid, and Basic Life Support (BLS) credentials.
- Experience: Experience in a pediatric setting, complex home healthcare, or school system is highly preferred; background with adolescents who exhibit profound physical or cognitive challenges is a distinct advantage.
- Background Check: Must pass all state-mandated expanded criminal history checks and child protection index screenings required by the Indiana Department of Education and the LaVille Community School Corporation.
Physical Demands & Work Environment
- Physical Strength: Frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and working at low tables or floor mats to accommodate student needs.
- Lifting Threshold: Ability to routinely lift and manipulate weights of 45+ pounds using proper ergonomics and mechanical aids when dealing with adolescent/high-school-aged students.
- Exposure: Regular daily exposure to bodily fluids and biological hazards, requiring absolute adherence to universal precautions and infection control protocols.
