Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) - Full Time

Location: AJ (Auburn)
Compensation: $25.68 – $33.78/hr

Accountable To Director of Nursing (DON) and Charge Registered Nurse (RN)

Position Summary

The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) provides direct patient care and support services to incarcerated individuals under the supervision of licensed nursing staff. Working within a secure correctional healthcare environment, the CNA assists with activities of daily living (ADLs), clinical monitoring, patient safety, and healthcare operations while maintaining professionalism, patient dignity, and compliance with organizational policies and NCCHC standards.

This role is essential to ensuring continuity of care, quality patient outcomes, and efficient healthcare operations within the correctional setting.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Direct Patient Care

  • Assist patients with activities of daily living (ADLs), including hygiene, grooming, dressing, ambulation, and transfers using appropriate assistive devices.

  • Obtain and document vital signs, including temperature, blood pressure, pulse, respirations, weight, and other assigned clinical observations.

  • Report abnormal findings and changes in patient condition promptly to supervising nursing staff.

  • Assist licensed nursing staff with patient assessments, sick call, medication pass support, and clinical procedures within the CNA scope of practice.

  • Respond appropriately to patient complaints, urgent clinical concerns, and emergencies by notifying licensed nursing staff immediately.

  • Assist with receiving screenings, chronic care clinic preparation, specialty appointment coordination, and patient follow-up activities as directed.

  • Deliver patient care with professionalism, compassion, confidentiality, and respect for all individuals.

Documentation & Compliance

  • Accurately document patient care activities, vital signs, observations, and assigned tasks within the electronic health record (EHR).

  • Maintain compliance with HIPAA requirements, organizational policies, and applicable confidentiality laws.

  • Support compliance with NCCHC standards and facility healthcare procedures.

  • Report observations and concerns requiring escalation to licensed nursing staff in a timely manner.

Unit Support & Safety

  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of healthcare units, treatment areas, and clinical supply inventories.

  • Assist with patient movement and transport throughout the facility in coordination with custody staff.

  • Adhere to all facility safety, security, infection control, and emergency response procedures.

  • Float between housing units, clinics, and healthcare areas as operationally required.

  • Participate in emergency preparedness activities and respond appropriately during facility emergencies.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education

  • High school diploma or GED required.

Licensure & Certifications

  • Current, active Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification required.

  • California applicants must maintain active certification through the California Nurse Assistant Registry (CDPH).

  • Current BLS/CPR certification required and must be maintained throughout employment.

Experience

  • Previous CNA experience in acute care, long-term care, correctional healthcare, behavioral health, or community health settings preferred.

  • Correctional healthcare experience preferred but not required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of basic nursing care principles, infection prevention, patient safety, and healthcare support services.

  • Ability to accurately obtain, document, and communicate clinical observations.

  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and teamwork skills.

  • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary healthcare team.

  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions in a structured and fast-paced environment.

  • Basic computer proficiency and ability to learn electronic health record systems.

  • Ability to maintain professionalism and composure in challenging situations.

Work Environment

  • Full-time position with rotating shifts, including days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays as operationally required.

  • On-site position within a secure correctional facility.

  • Must successfully complete all required security clearances and facility orientation prior to employment.

  • Regular exposure to patients with acute and chronic medical conditions, mental health conditions, and behavioral health needs.

Physical Demands

  • Stand, walk, bend, reach, and move throughout a correctional facility for extended periods.

  • Lift, transfer, push, pull, and assist patients weighing up to 50 pounds using proper body mechanics and assistive equipment.

  • Operate clinical equipment, computers, EHR systems, and office equipment.

  • Respond rapidly to medical emergencies throughout the facility.

  • Communicate effectively in both verbal and written formats in high-stress situations.
