    JOB DESCRIPTION - CERTIFIED OCCUAPTIONAL THERAPIST ASSISTANT (COTA)

    GENERAL DESCRIPTION

    The Certified Occupational Therapist Assistant (COTA) is an individual who has received an associate degree as a certified occupational therapist assistant from an approved school. The School COTA is a skilled, technical worker who performs occupational therapy and related duties as assigned by the school district Occupational Therapist. The work is carried out under the direction of the Occupational Therapist to whom the employee is responsible.

    Reports to and evaluated by: Supervisor of Special Education or Designee

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Contributes to the screening or evaluation process by implementing delegated assessments.
    • Provides verbal and written reports of observations and student's capacities to the occupational therapist.
    • Collaborates with the occupational therapist, the multidisciplinary team and the student (when applicable) to develop the occupational therapy plan based on the IFSP or IEP.
    • Responsible for knowing about the student's occupational therapy goals and the IFSP outcomes or IEP goals.
    • Documents the occupational therapy services within the time frames, formats, and standards established by the occupational therapist.
    • Selects, implements, and makes modifications to therapeutic activities and interventions that are consistent with demonstrated competency levels, student goals, and the requirements of the practice setting.
    • Responsible for knowing about the student's targeted occupational therapy outcomes and for providing information and documentation related to outcome achievement

    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

    Current State Occupational Therapy Practice Act requires periodic supervision of the Occupational Therapist Assistant by a licensed Occupational Therapist. Immediate supervision means the OT is in audible or visual range of the student and the COTA treating the student. Direct supervision means the OT is on the premises, being quickly and easily available. Indirect supervision means the OT is not on the premises, but has given either written or oral instruction for treatment. When the supervision is indirect, student re-evaluation must be performed by a supervising (licensed ) OT every five visits or once a week if treatment is performed more than once a week.
