Certified Ophthalmic Assistant

The Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) provides advanced clinical support to ophthalmologists, optometrists, and residents in the diagnosis and treatment of ocular diseases. Working under the direction of a provider, the COA performs comprehensive ophthalmic examinations, advanced diagnostic testing, assists with in-office procedures, accurately documents clinical findings, and serves as a clinical resource to support high-quality patient care and efficient clinic operations.

• Obtain and document comprehensive medical and ocular histories, medications, allergies, and chief complaints.
• Perform advanced ophthalmic examinations, including visual acuity, refraction, lensometry, keratometry, pupil assessment, extraocular motility, confrontation visual fields, color vision testing, stereopsis, and intraocular pressure measurements.
• Perform ophthalmic diagnostic testing, including Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), fundus photography, visual field testing, corneal topography, pachymetry, biometry, A-scan/B-scan ultrasonography, and other specialized testing as assigned.
• Administer ophthalmic medications and diagnostic drops in accordance with provider orders and organizational policy.
• Assist physicians and residents during examinations, intravitreal injections, laser procedures, and minor office procedures while maintaining sterile technique.
• Accurately document examination findings, diagnostic results, procedures, and treatment plans in the electronic medical record.
• Prepare, maintain, and troubleshoot ophthalmic equipment while ensuring compliance with infection prevention and safety standards.
• Educate patients regarding diagnostic testing, medications, procedures, postoperative care, and treatment plans as directed by the provider.
• Promote efficient patient flow by coordinating care with providers and clinic staff.
• Serve as a clinical resource by assisting with onboarding, mentoring, and training new ophthalmic staff and students.
• Maintain compliance with HIPAA, OSHA, Joint Commission, and organizational policies.
• Participate in quality improvement initiatives and perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: High School Diploma

Experience: At least one year of relevant experience, more experience preferred.

Licensure: COA-Certified Ophthalmic Assistant Certification by JCAHPO (Joint Commission of Accredited Health Professionals in Ophthalmology) may be required. See job requisition for position certification requirements.

Job requires sitting/standing for prolonged periods and frequently bending/stooping. Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills; Attention to detail and ability to write legibly; Ability to lift/push/pull 50 - 100lbs. May be exposed to chemicals, radiation, blood/body fluids and infectious disease.

The pay range for this role is $19.49 - $30.21 hourly. Individual compensation will be determined by the selected candidate"s qualifications, previous work experience, and/or education.
