Performs evaluation and treatment of adult and pediatric patients with disorders of the visual system, with an emphasis on binocular vision and eye movement disorders. Performs strabismus evaluation including motor testing, evaluation of Fresnel and spectacle prisms, convergence exercises, and orthoptic treatment. Responsibilities also include infant and pediatric vision assessment, retinoscopy, and refraction. Models appropriate behavior as exemplified in MLH Mission, Vision and Values.

A Brief Overview

What You Will Do

• Performs patient screening examinations. • Provides patient testing and assessment. • Provides Orthoptic treatment.

 

Education/ Formal Training Requirements

• Required - Bachelors Degree Ophthalmologic care • Preferred - Bachelors Degree Orthoptics

 

Work Experience Requirements

• Preferred - No prior work experience

 

Licenses and Certifications Requirements

• Required - Certified Orthoptist - American Orthoptic Council

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Knowledge of binocular vision and eye movement disorders • Demonstrates ability to perform infant and pediatric vision assessments • Demonstrates ability to perform manifest and cycloplegic refractions in children • Knowledge of various testing including: • Visual Acuity testing • Lensometry • Retinoscopy • Refraction • Color Vision • Pupil and Slit Lamp Biomicroscopy • Tonometry • Visual Fields

 

Supervision Provided by this Position

There are no supervisory or lead responsibilities assigned to this position.

 

Physical Demands

The physical activities of this position may include: • Climbing • Pushing • Standing • Hearing • Walking • Reaching • Grasping • Kneeling • Stooping • Repetitive motion

Must have good balance and coordination. The physical requirements of this position are: medium work - exerting up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally and/or up to 25 lbs. of force frequently. The Associate is required to have close visual acuity including color, depth perception, and field of vision to perform an activity, such as assessing patients, preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; or extensive reading. Frequent invasive and non-invasive patient contact. Exposure to patient body fluids as well as exposure to hazardous or poisonous materials. Ability to react quickly to emergency situations.
