Certified Phlebotomy Technician

Position Summary

The Certified Phlebotomy Technician is responsible for performing blood collection and related specimen-handling procedures in a clinical healthcare setting. The position requires a strong commitment to patient safety, specimen integrity, infection-control practices, and compassionate patient care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform venipuncture and other approved blood collection procedures accurately and safely.

  • Verify patient identification and ensure specimens are properly labeled and documented.

  • Prepare patients for blood collection and explain procedures clearly to reduce anxiety and ensure cooperation.

  • Collect, handle, process, and transport blood and other clinical specimens according to established procedures.

  • Maintain specimen integrity and follow appropriate protocols for storage and transportation.

  • Use appropriate infection-control and safety procedures during all specimen collection activities.

  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.

  • Properly operate and maintain phlebotomy equipment and supplies.

  • Monitor inventory levels and notify appropriate personnel when supplies need to be replenished.

  • Accurately document specimen collection and related patient information.

  • Follow established laboratory procedures, quality standards, and regulatory requirements.

  • Identify and report specimen collection issues, patient concerns, or other problems to the appropriate healthcare professional.

  • Maintain patient confidentiality and protect sensitive medical information.

  • Provide professional, respectful, and patient-centered service.

  • Work collaboratively with nurses, laboratory personnel, providers, and other members of the healthcare team.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Education

  • High school diploma or GED.

Certification & Licensure

  • Current California phlebotomy certification/licensure as required for the position.

Experience

  • Approximately 2 6 years of laboratory or phlebotomy experience preferred.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in a clinical, outpatient, laboratory, or healthcare environment.

  • Familiarity with electronic medical records and laboratory information systems.

  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.

  • Experience working with diverse patient populations.

Language Skills

  • Bilingual English/Spanish skills preferred.

  • Requires adherence to applicable safety, infection-control, and regulatory requirements.

Assignment Details

  • Job Type: Temporary assignment

  • Assignment Length: Approximately 4 months

  • Schedule: Monday Friday, approximately 8:30 AM 5:30 PM

  • Location: Outpatient healthcare setting in San Diego County, California
