JOB TITLE: Certified Police Officer

DEPARTMENT: Police, City of Madison

JOB SUMMARY: This position is responsible for the enforcement of local, state, and federal

laws and the protection of life and property.

MAJOR DUTIES:

o Patrols the community on foot or in a vehicle to detect or deter criminal or suspicious

activity; apprehends offenders, promotes and preserves the peace, and reduces

opportunities for the commission of crimes.

o Responds to emergency and non-emergency calls for service.

o Investigates traffic accidents.

o Responds to public emergencies.

o Enforces traffic laws to facilitate the movement of vehicular and pedestrian traffic.

o Answers questions and provides information to the general public.

o Assists other departments as directed.

o Completes required reports.

o Maintains assigned weapons, vehicles, and equipment.

o Attends training classes and seminars.

o Investigates crimes; interviews suspects, witnesses, and victims.

o Processes crime scenes; collects and preserves evidence.

o Executes search and arrest warrants.

o Prepares case files; prepares investigation reports.

o Testifies in court.

o Transports inmates to court and other locations.

o Participates in community-oriented policing activities.

o Provides first response emergency medical care to victims.

o Performs other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:

o Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and ordinances.

o Knowledge of criminal investigation procedures.

o Knowledge of police methods and procedures.

o Knowledge of modern office principles and practices.

o Knowledge of the physical and social characteristics of the city.

o Skill in interpersonal relations.

o Skill in the operation of standard office equipment, including computers, typewriters,

telephones, and printers.

o Skill in the use and operation of assigned firearms, tools, equipment, and vehicles.

o Skill in oral and written communication.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Lieutenant or Sergeant assigns work in terms of

general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures,

accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES: Guidelines include department policies and procedures and federal, state, and

local laws and ordinances. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some

interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY: The work consists of related duties related to the enforcement of local, state,

and federal laws. Potentially dangerous and life threatening situations contribute to the

complexity of the position.

SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to participate in law enforcement

activities. Successful performance contributes to the efficiency of department operations.

PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with co-workers, representatives of other

departments, the general public, victims, witnesses, offenders, and representatives of federal,

state, and local law enforcement and judicial agencies.

PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve

problems, and provide services.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing,

walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects,

uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and distinguishes between shades of

color.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed in an office, patrol car, and

outdoors. The employee may be exposed to noise, machinery with moving parts, occasional cold

or inclement weather, and potential life threatening situations. The work requires the use of

specialized law enforcement equipment.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: None.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

o Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly

associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.

o No experience requirements. Georgia POST certification is preferred.

o Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of

Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

o Ability to meet current requirements set forth by the Police Standards and Training

Council for the State of Georgia. Current Georgia POST Certification Preferred.
