General Summary:

Processes and distributes disposable and reusable medical/surgical supplies in accordance with departmental and Hospital policies and procedures.

Education, Licensure, Registration and Experience:

High School diploma or equivalent

Certification by International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management (IAHCSMM) or Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD).

Six months to one-year Central Services and Supplies, or related experience preferred.

BLS Certification required within 90 days. 

Essential Functions:

Demonstrates knowledge of basic concepts of infection control and can adapt this knowledge to sterile processing procedures.

Decontamination area - correctly sorts according to heat sensitivity and immersability, all items are washed and thoroughly inspected.

Decontamination area - demonstrates the safe use of processing equipment including ultrasonic cleaners and washers.

Assembly and packaging - inspects all instruments for alignment, sharpness, and cleanliness, wraps and assembles instruments and sets accurately and correctly labels contents.

Sterilization - determines appropriate mode of sterilization for all reusable items, correctly loads and operates all sterilization equipment.

Recording and Testing - performs and accurately documents Bowie-Dick, chemical integrators, biological testing for all sterilization equipment.

Stock and Inventory - demonstrates proper care and handling of instruments and equipment. Rotates disposable stock and maintains inventory levels of stock in the department.

Utilizes department manuals and on-line resources to clarify sterilization parameters to follow the manufactures IFU.

100% completion of department specific required annual competencies.

Attends all mandatory education programs and can describe his or her responsibilities related to general safety and regulatory compliance.

Appearance is professional, neat, clean, and appropriate for the work environment. Wears proper photo identification badge while on duty.

Maintains confidentiality of all hospital and patient information at all times, as observed by peers and management.

Attends monthly staff meetings and participates in monthly rounding process with manager to assure effective and timely two-way communications.

Participates in and completes required department specific education and training programs and can describe his or her responsibilities related to department safety and specific job-related hazards.

Follows safety and security policies including exposure control plans/blood borne and airborne pathogens.
