Role
This position is located at the Prescott Juvenile Justice Center School
Under general supervision, organizes and guides instruction for elementary, middle and/or high school-aged students who reside in a detention setting.
This is an employment contracted position with the Yavapai County School Superintendent's Office.
Major Duties, Responsibilities
- Teaches students in juvenile detention school from ages 8 to 18 using blended instructional techniques.
- Evaluates student progress using transcripts and a variety of evaluative procedures.
- Maintains accurate and concise records of student achievement and works with special education staff to ensure compliance with goals as written in the IEP.
- Remains alert to special needs of students who display learning, behavioral, or physical characteristics distinctive from the norm, and refers such students for additional help through established procedures.
- Advises Principal or established Lead Instructor of all areas of need and cooperates in the problem-solving process.
- Develops effective lines of communication between teaching staff and probation/detention staff.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Education:
Bachelor's degree in Education or related field.
Experience:
Three (3) years of experience working with youth in an educational setting or related field, preferably in an alternative education classroom.
An equivalent combination of directly related work experience and education may substitute for the degree requirement on a year-per-year basis.
Additional Requirements:
Must possess a valid Arizona driver's license.
Must possess valid Arizona Teaching Certificate.
Must possess fingerprint clearance card and the ability to work within a Secure Care facility.

- Follow and adhere to policies and procedures for the maintenance of a clean and orderly classroom.
- Adhere to all detention policies and procedures.
- Maintain a cooperative partnership with detention and probation personnel.
- Develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, employees of other departments, representatives of other organizations, County officials, and the public.
- Keep management informed of key operating issues affecting the department.
- Remain current in knowledge required to perform assigned duties.
- Handle confidential matters and maintain discretion always.
- Act with courtesy, tact, and diplomacy.
Work Environment:
The work environment is associated with a juvenile detention classroom setting. The work area is adequately lighted, heated or cooled and ventilated.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time. Sufficient vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; hearing and speech ability to communicate effective in-person and telephonically. Capable of frequent repetitive movement of arms, fingers, and wrists. Ability to bend, crouch, and lift and carry up to 30 pounds.
