The Certified Veterinary Technician serves as an essential member of the Veterinary team, providing skilled medical, technical and administrative support to the doctor throughout all phases of care. This role is vital in ensuring efficient, high-quality veterinary services, including patient prep, diagnostics, treatments and follow-up care. The Certified Veterinary Technician also plays a critical role in educating and communicating with pet parents, offering guidance on post-visit care, preventive health and treatment plans. In addition, they help maintain a clean, organized and well-equipped clinical environment while promoting a compassionate and collaborative culture focused on animal well-being.
Essential Responsibilities
Provides compassionate, hands-on care to all patients, ensuring comfort, safety and well-being
Assists with physical exams, records vitals and clinical observations and accurately documents patient information (including SOAP notes and vaccine records)
Supports veterinarians in medical, surgical and dental procedures, including anesthesia administration and monitoring
Prepares patients for surgery, places IV catheters, takes radiographs and performs EKGs/EEGs
Performs laboratory diagnostics such as blood draws, fecal exams, urinalysis and skin/fungal testing
Administers medications and injections per hospital protocols
Educates clients on medications, at-home care and follow-up procedures; makes client follow-up calls as needed
Admits and discharges patients per doctor’s instructions ensuring clear client communication
Maintains clean and organized exam rooms, surgical areas and equipment; cleans and restocks the operating room
Follows OSHA standards and infection control protocols to maintain a safe and hygienic hospital environment
Interprets canine body language to ensure safe handling in accordance with handling guidelines
Assists with evacuation of all animals if an emergency occurs
Qualifications
3+ years of professional work experience as a Certified Veterinary Technician
Genuinely enjoys helping people and their pets
Can handle the stress when animals are ill or in pain
Shows patience and empathy to clients that are emotionally charged and in all interactions
Highly organized
Works well in a team setting
Able to shift priorities in accordance with unexpected events
Remains calm and efficient during a medical crisis
Comfortable interacting with animals of all breeds and sizes
Passionate about animal welfare; treats all animals with compassion and kindness
Must be able to learn and efficiently use company software
Must be able to learn new technology in accordance with business needs
Physical Demands
Position requires a person to be both indoors and outdoors regardless of the weather
Majority of the day is spent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing
Must be able to lift 50 pounds regularly, up to 100 pounds with assist
Must be comfortable working with a wide variety of animals including small and large dogs
Must be able to work around pet hair and dander
Must be able to climb 2 flights of stairs multiple times per day
