Certified Veterinary Technician

The Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife, Inc. is a nonprofit teaching hospital and visitor education center on Sanibel Island dedicated to saving wildlife through advanced veterinary care, research, education, and conservation medicine. Each year, CROW provides specialized treatment for thousands of sick, injured, and orphaned native and migratory wildlife.

Certified Veterinary Technician: Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

\n

• Provide support in clinical patient care to the Senior Staff Veterinarian, CVT/ICU Manager, and veterinary team as directed.

\n

• Assist and supervise in daily training of students, staff, and volunteers in ICU patient care and hospital protocols.

\n

• Assist with triage physical exams and ICU patient veterinary rechecks.

\n

• Oversee and perform ICU treatments, feedings, diagnostics, radiographs, wound care, IVC placement, venipuncture, and determine husbandry for ICU patients. Oversee flow of daily ICU patient care tasks. 

\n

• Perform daily diagnostics including manual CBCs for avian, mammal, and reptile, fecal, Chemistry, and I-Stat. 

\n

• Assist CVT/ICU Manager in maintaining the in-house laboratory and preparing diagnostic shipments. 

\n

• Maintain surgery suite for immediate use and provides surgical assistance, clean and sterilize instruments, and maintain endoscopy equipment. 

\n

• Monitor patients under anesthesia and recovery, including training students in the same protocols.

\n

• Maintain patient medical records database in compliance with regulations. Ensure all lab work is entered into the online database in a timely manner.

\n

• Supervise maintenance, cleaning and overall orderliness of the hospital and rehabilitative facilities. 

\n

• Assist with primary care for neonatal mammals and birds and all aspects of rehabilitation process as needed when requested by the rehabilitation team.

\n

• Advise all veterinary interns in clinic procedural matters if the supervising veterinarian is unavailable.

\n

• Give presentations or assist in educational efforts such as “CROW Campus Tours” as directed. 

\n

• Give teaching rounds for students in collaboration with the supervising veterinarian.

\n

• Aid Rescue and Release Coordinator(s) in coordinating rescue, transport, and release of injured, sick, or rehabilitated wildlife to and from CROW as needed. 

\n

• Assist in collaborative projects as requested by the veterinary staff (BMNSM, FWC, etc.). 

\n

• Other duties as assigned (cross-trained in other areas of the clinic).

\n

Education and/or Work Experience 

\n

• Extensive wildlife rehabilitation skills. Must be licensed/certified veterinary technician.

\n

• Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

\n

• Knowledge of office equipment and software systems including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.

\n

• Must be able to work efficiently, accurately, independently, and be able to multi-task.

\n

• Must be a team player with positive attitude and willingness to teach students and staff. 

\n

• Must be able to work cooperatively with co-workers, volunteers, and the public. 

\n

Physical Requirements:

\n

• Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state, and local standards. Including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards.

\n

• Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state, and local standards. 

\n

• Must be able to talk, listen, and speak clearly. • Required to stand, walk, and may have to climb and/or balance.

\n

• Must frequently lift and move up to 50 pounds.
