Description

The Purpose

The Chair of Math and Science serves as a faculty leader and faculty member with administrative oversight for the department on a variety of student, faculty, budget, planning, and personnel issues. The Chair is responsible for supervising in the assigned program areas of Mathematics, Sciences (including Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Astronomy) and Economics. Administrative oversight includes the coordination and development of long and short-range plans for assigned programs, evaluating and giving feedback to faculty on instructional performance, and development of initiatives to ensure faculty remain current in their respective disciplines as well as college policy and procedures. As a faculty member, the Chair performs the instructional and reporting expectations of faculty.

Contract length will be 12 months.

Examples of Duties

What Youll be Doing

  • Provides meaningful input on curriculum matters and supports decisions of the instructional and college administration.

  • Coordinate the development of the course schedule for each semester for courses and programs in the assigned area.

  • Works with the Chair of Arts and Humanities, Chair of Social and Behavioral Sciences and the Dean to coordinate college transfer advising.

  • Ensures Advisory boards meet at least once a year in all assigned areas.

  • Ensures that classroom observations (both online and seated) of part-time faculty are completed according to Board Procedures.

  • Ensures that program and student learning outcomes are developed and assessed and that program improvements are undertaken based on results for the assigned program areas.

  • Serves on committees.

  • Mentors or assigns mentors to part-time instructors as needed.

  • Recruits and selects part-time instructors.

  • Establishes and set goals for the department with input from faculty, department staff, the Dean, and the NCCCS.

  • Leads and supervises instructors in assigned department to ensure deadlines and curriculum requirements are met.

  • Ensures adherence to program and college policies by instructors and students.

  • Coordinate developmental classes assigned to the areas of supervision.

  • Maintain a teaching load in accordance with the Faculty Workload Policy.

  • Support student learning and mastery by offering workshops and tutoring in the Student Success Center as needed.

  • Assists faculty and staff with assessment activities related to the general education competencies, ensure the prompt reporting of data to the Office for Planning, Research and Institutional Effectiveness, lead the faculty in the process of reviewing the data and developing strategies to improve, and ensure those strategies are implemented.

  • Ensures compliance with policies of the College, NC Community College System, and applicable State and Federal agencies.

Qualifications

Education

Master's Degree from a regionally accredited institution in the mathematics disciplines or sufficient discipline course work at the master's level (18 semester hours minimum) in mathematics

Experience

Minimum of 5 years of Community College teaching experience in traditional, hybrid, blended, and online modalities.

Previous supervisory experience preferred.

Previous experience working with both traditional and high school students preferred.

All persons must provide verifiable and relevant professional experience in a work-place setting or demonstrated instructional/teaching environment.

Skills and the Know-How

  • Must possess strong personal and professional integrity, and have a commitment to safety.

  • Knowledge of management and administrative principles and practices.

  • Knowledge of laws, statutes, rules, and regulations affecting assigned curriculum programs.

  • Knowledge of community college organizational structure including the integration of academic, continuing education, and student services programs.

  • Ability to communicate effectively in written and spoken English.

  • Ability to operate a PC and related software.

  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with community organizations, businesses, college staff, and the general public.

  • Ability to provide leadership in an environment characterized by significant and constant change.

The ability to perform all duties associated with the position including, but not limited to lifting, prolonged standing, sitting, bending, stooping, and operating or performing work with associated tools and machines.
