Position Summary
The Charge Nurse coordinates and evaluates the delivery of safe and effective patient care by communicating across departments and disciplines to assure implementation of care. This role serves as a nursing resource for hospital departments and a liaison for patients, visitors, and between hospital departments and administration.
The Charge Nurse demonstrates professionalism at all times, meets regulatory and policy requirements, engages standards of practice, and holds team members accountable for safe, competent practice, quality care, and continual improvement.
Essential Job Duties
- Oversee communication related to the coordination of patient care across the facility.
- Conduct daily rounding in Acute Care, Birthing Center, Cancer, Wound and Infusion, Emergency Department, and Surgery to assess and communicate patient transfers between departments.
- Oversee patient flow between departments.
- Lead by setting the tone for a professional work environment through mentoring and serving as a resource.
- Answer staff questions and assist with resources.
- Assist Directors within expected timeframes and communicate with Department Directors to ensure proper follow-up.
- Assist staff in providing direct patient care as needed and ensure staffing needs are met.
- Retrieve items necessary for patient care from other departments as needed.
- Assist with determining appropriate patient placement for Acute Care admissions.
- Assist with after-hours pharmacy needs.
- Activate and manage Incident Command during Mass Casualty Incidents.
- Assist with coordinating staffing needs between departments.
- Perform other duties as requested.
Required Qualifications
- Two-year degree in Nursing required.
- BSN preferred.
- Current Wisconsin Registered Nurse license.
- BLS certification required or obtained within one month of hire.
- ACLS, PALS, and NRP certification required or obtained within 12 months of hire.
- TNCC encouraged.
- Three (3) or more years of related work experience required.
