US:NV:Carson City Clinical Decision Unit

Full Time Night Shift

Summary

The Charge Nurse directly supervises staff and is a clinical expert practitioner specific to the unit and/or initiative. This position includes both direct and indirect patient care in combination with education/staff development functions as well as designated leadership functions to promote high-quality and cost-effective health care.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Current and unencumbered licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) through the Nevada State Board of Nursing American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) for healthcare providers.
  • American Heart Association (AHA) Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) for healthcare providers
  • National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification within six (6) months or hire or position entry
  • For employees hired or entered into the position prior to 11/19/25, National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification must be obtained by 5/19/26.

Preferred:

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing

Unit Specific Requirements

Medical Oncology

Required:

  • Non-violent crisis intervention (CPI) within six (6) months of hire or position entry.
  • Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) certification within six (6) months of hire or position entry

Preferred:

  • One (1) Year Chemotherapy Experience

Sierra Post-Op

Preferred:

  • Certified Medical Surgical Registered Nurse (CMS-RN)
  • Orthopedic Nurse Certified (ONC)

Surgical Orthopedics

Preferred:

  • Certified Medical Surgical Registered Nurse (CMS-RN)
  • Orthopedic Nurse Certified (ONC)

Telemetry

Required:

  • ECG Rhythm Interpretation Course within six (6) months of employment or position entry

Preferred:

  • Progressive Care Cardiac Nursing (PCCN) national, board certification.
  • Cardiac Vascular Nursing Certification (CV-BC) national, board certification.

Clinical Decision Unit (CDU)

Required:

  • ECG Rhythm Interpretation Course within six (6) months of employment or position entry
  • Non-violent crisis intervention (CPI) within 6 months of hire or position entry.

Preferred:

  • Nationally recognized nursing certification

Essential Functions

  • Demonstrates expert clinical knowledge and skill in the specialization of the unit or initiative.
  • Attends 75% of scheduled staff meetings/unit conferences/ Charge Nurse Meetings. Attends/completes 100% of all required Unit and Hospital education and Employee Health annual requirements by the established deadlines.
  • Provides for the coordination of patient care throughout the continuum for areas of responsibility.
  • Serves as an expert clinician, acting as a clinical resource for the staff. Understands their chain of command and appropriate resources available.
  • Works collaboratively with other disciplines in problem analysis and resolution for pathways, protocols and patient care delivery.
  • Expertly organizes and reprioritizes patient care activities based on subtle and overt and/or environmental changes.
  • Expertly provides direct patient care to patients and families in a culturally, developmentally and ethically appropriate manner.
  • Demonstrates expert skill in managing and planning care for complex patient/family scenarios including physical, psychosocial, spiritual and learning needs of the patient/family.
  • Effectively performs and improves all processes in order to achieve excellence with regard to CTH quality standards and benchmarks.
  • As part of unit leadership, collaborates in developing, monitoring and changing practice as a result of performance improvement initiatives.
  • As part of unit leadership, collaborates to provide direction for staff development activities and orientation programs and staff meetings.
  • Supports Evidence Based Practice in clinical specialty to guide nursing practice, development of plans of care and interventions.
  • Demonstrates the ability to enhance skills and performance of others in order to achieve professional and organizational goals. This competency is demonstrated by systematically providing clear objectives, performance-specific feedback, effective coaching and developmental experience/opportunities.
  • Demonstrates the ability to optimize utilization of staff, matching staff talents and proficiencies to organizational needs in making, evaluating and reorganizing patient care assignments.
  • As part of unit leadership, helps to manage the daily operational throughput in collaboration with other unit leaders and interdisciplinary teams. Will assist with room assignments, rounds/huddles, transfers/discharges, and effective communication with other disciplines and departments.
  • As part of unit leadership is responsible for review and implementation of the Accreditation standards in collaboration with other unit leaders, including participation in Environment of care rounds.
  • Fosters interdisciplinary collaboration by chairing or serving as a representative for nursing on hospital-wide and service line committees and/or councils.
  • As part of unit leadership, participates in goal setting and prioritization.
  • Responsible for staffing and scheduling, orientation/development, and assistance with staff selection.
  • Educates staff.
  • Demonstrates competency in computer documentation when completing patient records and serves as a resource.
  • Participates in fiscal management, managing repair requests and follow up for broken equipment, evaluation of new equipment and daily management of schedule to ensure appropriate staffing levels for volume, acuity, and productivity.
