A middle school cheerleading coach is responsible for leading a team of student-athletes in sideline spirit, technical skill development and safety compliance.  Most positions are seasonal stipend roles, meaning they are paid a fixed amount for the duration of the sports season rather than an hourly wage.

Core Responsibilities
  • Skill Instruction: Teach and refine technical fundamentals including jumps, chants, dance routines, tumbling, and stunting.
  • Team Management: Organize and supervise tryouts, practices, and performances at basketball or football games.
  • Safety & Compliance: Ensure all participants meet Tennessee Middle School Athletic Association (TMSAA) or Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) eligibility requirements, including valid physicals and parent consent forms.
  • Academic Monitoring: Develop and monitor plans to ensure student-athletes maintain required academic standards to remain eligible.
  • Logistics: Coordinate schedules with the Athletic Director, manage uniform inventory, and oversee team travel for away games or competitions.
  • Role Modeling: Act as a positive example regarding sportsmanship, language, and conduct for students and the community

Requirements & Qualifications
  • Background Check: Candidates must pass a mandatory criminal background check.
  • Certifications: Most districts require CPR/First Aid certification and completion of NFHS (National Federation of State High School Associations) safety courses, particularly for stunting.
  • Experience: Prior experience in cheerleading, gymnastics, or dance is usually required, with a strong emphasis on knowledge of safety protocols.
  • Status: While many coaches are also teachers within the school, many Tennessee districts hire "non-faculty" coaches for these roles.
