Job Summary

To develop speech and language skills for students with disabilities that interfere with an individual students ability to access the educational program.

Responsibilities

• Demonstrates specialized skills through a high-level knowledge in designing and conducting specialized programs of prevention, intervention, remediation, and evaluation in the area of speech and communication skills.
• Serves as a resource to school staff members in communication and speech improvement.
• Assists and guides teachers in observing, describing, and referring suspected and identified speech and language impairments.
• Provides a thorough assessment and diagnosis of speech, voice, hearing, and language impairments.
• Provides screening to identify children with speech and language impairments at regular intervals and at specified levels.
• Assists in proper referrals of individuals to agencies and specialists in the community as appropriate.
• Provides appropriate individualized programs of therapy to meet individual students needs and correct existing speech or language impairments.
• Demonstrates management of special and technical environment through a high level of performance in managing and organizing the special materials, equipment, and environment essential to the specialized programs.
• Provides information, support, and counseling to parents and families when appropriate.
• Collaborates with classroom teachers and other school staff members to implement therapy by suggesting modifications for the students daily activities.
• Provides in-service education and serves as a consultant to teachers and school staff members on topics concerning speech improvement.
• Demonstrates professionalism and continued professional growth.
• Keeps thorough ongoing records for the individual student receiving therapy or other school-provided speech services.
• Maintains lists of referred, screened, and eligible students as well as a directory of outside agencies, consultants, specialists, and related services.
• Compiles case history data on those cases where additional family history, health history, early developmental history, and environmental history are deemed appropriate.
• Assumes primary responsibility for requisitioning and maintaining needed equipment and supplies.
• Performs essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
• Complete work at the assigned workstation.
• Consistently deals with people in a polite and courteous manner.

Requirements

• Valid Washington State Educational Staff Associate Certificate with speech-language pathologist/audiologist endorsement.
• Hold or be able to attain CCC-SLP certification.
• Knowledge of both verbal and non-verbal communications methods, including AAC visuals, PECS, and voice output devices, from simple to advanced.
• Demonstrated willingness and ability to work cooperatively with administration and staff.

Physical Requirements

• Significant physical abilities may include lifting, carrying, 25 to 50 pounds, reaching, handling, talking, hearing conversations near and far, visual acuity, depth perception, accommodation, and field of vision.

The District complies with State Law regarding SEBB School Employee Benefits Board and DRS Washington State Department of Retirement Systems eligibility and benefits. To be eligible, a person must work 630 hours in the school year. If eligible, SEBB benefits include medical, dental, vision, life insurance, long-term disability, AD&D Insurance, Flexible Spending Arrangements (FSA), and Dependent Care Assistance Program (DCAP). Retirement benefits if eligible may include membership in TRS retirement plans, in addition to voluntary Deferred Compensation Program and 403b Annuity enrollments.
