Responsibilities

• Develop, implement, and maintain the institutional Chemical Hygiene Plan (CHP). Interpret and apply OSHA Laboratory Standard (29 CFR 1910.1450), EPA, DOT, DEA, and applicable state regulations. Conduct regulatory gap analyses and ensure corrective action implementation. Serve as institutional contact for chemical safety compliance inspections and audits. Maintain required documentation, policies, and compliance records.
• Develop and manage laboratory inspection programs for chemical safety compliance. Conduct hazard assessments for new research protocols, high-hazard chemicals, and emerging technologies.

Evaluate engineering controls (e.g., chemical fume hoods, local exhaust ventilation). Coordinate exposure monitoring when required and interpret results. Track corrective actions and ensure timely resolution.

• Develop and deliver chemical safety training programs (initial and refresher). Provide specialized training for high-hazard materials (pyrophoric, peroxide formers, carcinogens, etc.). Support laboratory onboarding and safety orientation programs. Create guidance documents, SOP templates, and safety resources.
• Provide oversight into the safe handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous chemicals. Review and approve Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for particularly hazardous substances. Support chemical inventory management systems and compliance. Assist in managing controlled substances, select carcinogens, and acutely toxic chemicals. Provide technical guidance for laboratory design and renovation projects.
• Lead or support investigations of chemical incidents, spills, exposures, and near misses. Develop corrective action plans and trend analyses. Participate in emergency response planning and drills. Serve as a technical advisor during chemical emergencies.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, EH&S, IH, or related scientific degree and four years of experience or a high school diploma or equivalent and eight years of experience. (Note: or a combination of post-high school education and related experience equal to eight years.)
• Possess or obtain a Chemical Hygiene Officer (CHO) certification or ability to obtain one within one year of employment.
• A valid Florida or Georgia drivers license or the ability to obtain one upon hire
