Job Description

Shift: 3rd and 4th

PRIMARY OBJECTIVE OF POSITION

To conduct routine and special raw materials and control testing in a manner that contributes to the production of high quality company products. To perform environmental testing to ensure compliance with government regulations. To perform technical assignments relating to improvement efforts in the manufacturing process.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

(Experience, education, licenses, certifications, and specific knowledge, skills and abilities required for the position.)

  • High school diploma or GED
  • 1+ years' experience conducting chemical testing, analysis and reporting
  • Experience with MS Word and Excel
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain cooperative work relationships with other departments and company personnel
  • Demonstrated ability to recognize and protect the confidential nature of research and development work
  • Demonstrated ability to complete assigned responsibilities under minimal supervision

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

(Fundamental duties necessary to achieve the objective of the position.)

Performs chemical analyses of raw materials and in-process products and reports tests results in accordance with established standards. Prepares reagent chemical solutions for use in testing according to prescribed methods. Performs technical assignments relating to improvement efforts in the manufacturing process. This includes conducting experiments, reporting and analyzing the results, and making improvement recommendation. This also includes process monitoring and control activities. Purchases lab equipment and supplies at the most favorable cost, in accordance with established company procedures. Performs routine maintenance and repairs on lab equipment, including calibration testing of equipment as often as required to ensure high quality test results. Arranges for outside repair services as necessary to keep equipment in good operating condition. Prepares reports of in-progress and completed tests and analyses to provide project status information to management. Observes and enforces all established safety and housekeeping regulations related to chemical testing. Performs other duties, as the need is apparent or as assigned.

SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS OF THE POSITION

Physical Requirements: Some sitting with considerable standing and walking when in the plant. Lifting and carrying testing equipment, chemicals, etc. of up to 40 pounds. Some climbing, stooping, kneeling and crouching to effectively observe production problems in the facility. Manual dexterity for operating computer keyboard.

Mental Requirements: Good reading skills to understand reports, vendor quotes, literature and technical materials, and ability to read engineering drawings. Problem-solving, reasoning and attention to detail to analyze data, and improve processes. Math comprehension for engineering and chemical formulae. Verbal communications for soliciting supervisory and employee opinions, updating supervisor, and participating in teams. Written communication for memos, and progress reports. Flexibility and ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.

Equipment Used: Personal Computer, Chemistry Laboratory Equipment

Working Environment: About 25% spent in manufacturing environment subject to dirt, dust, noise and odors. This setting also means some exposure to moving mechanical parts, machine tool lubricant mists and explosive material. Some time is spent outside, walking between buildings or in office setting and duties vary between working alone and with or around others. Close contact with manufacturing supervisors and natural work teams.

ADDITIONAL DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience working with explosive chemicals and products desired
  • Experience with Minitab
  • Chemical Technical degree from vocational college

Work Environment:

Employee work assignments may include tasks working with and/or exposure to potentially hazardous areas, including flammables and explosives. Safety training is provided to all employees to ensure compliance with company and federal regulations.

Pay Range:

Starting Hourly Rate: $20.67

The actual annual salary offered to a candidate will be based on variables including experience, geographic location, education, and skills/achievements, and will be mutually agreed upon at the time of offer.
