    Description

Chief Estimator – HVAC (Data Center Focus)

    Overview:
We’re looking for a Chief Estimator to lead the estimating process for complex, high-value HVAC systems in commercial construction—specifically data center projects. You’ll manage deadlines, mentor junior estimators, and help shape our overall estimating strategy. This is a leadership role that requires strong technical knowledge, precision, and collaboration.

    Key Responsibilities

    Estimating & Bidding

    • Lead estimates for large-scale HVAC and plumbing systems from start to finish.

    • Review drawings, specs, and RFPs to ensure accurate, complete proposals.

    • Prepare detailed material and labor takeoffs.

    • Analyze subcontractor/vendor quotes and incorporate into bids.

    • Work with internal teams to finalize and submit timely, competitive proposals.

    • Prioritize meeting tight bid deadlines without sacrificing accuracy.

    Team Leadership & Mentorship

    • Train and guide junior estimators on best practices.

    • Review team estimates for quality and accuracy.

    • Support a collaborative and deadline-driven work culture.

    • Improve department processes and share strategic insights with leadership.

    Cost Management & Risk Control

    • Evaluate scope, specs, and documents to uncover risks and savings opportunities.

    • Provide value engineering options and track real-world cost trends.

    • Adjust estimates as scope or market conditions change.

    • Build contingency plans into estimates to manage uncertainty.

    Collaboration & Project Support

    • Work with project managers, clients, and sales to align on scope and costs.

    • Attend pre-bid meetings and site visits to better understand project needs.

    • Support project teams post-award to ensure estimate alignment with execution.

    • Maintain cost history and lessons learned to improve future estimates.

    Bid Review & Quality Assurance

    • Participate in formal bid reviews with senior leadership.

    • Ensure estimates reflect full project scope and reduce cost gaps.

    • Focus on quality over quantity—conversion rate and client trust matter.

    Key Metrics (KPIs)

    • Estimate accuracy vs. final cost

    • On-time bid submissions

    • Quality and conversion rate of awarded bids

    • Mentoring and team development success

    • Cost savings through value engineering

    What You Bring

    Required:

    • 7+ years of estimating HVAC and plumbing in commercial construction

    • Must have experience with data center projects

    • Deep knowledge of mechanical systems, labor, and material costs

    • Strong skills in estimating software (FastPipe, QuoteSoft, BidTracer, etc.) and Excel

    • Confident communicator and natural team leader

    • Proven ability to deliver accurate, timely, and strategic bids

    Preferred:

    • Experience in high-stakes or large-scale mechanical contracting

    • Familiarity with CX Alloy, Procore, Viewpoint, or Microsoft Project

    • Understanding of risk management and value engineering strategies
