Position Overview
We are seeking a seasoned Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to lead the financial operations of a rural healthcare organization in the Midwest. This executive will partner closely with the CEO and Board of Directors to stabilize financial performance, execute a comprehensive turnaround strategy, and position the organization for long-term sustainability.
The ideal candidate brings deep rural healthcare experience, a hands-on leadership approach, and a proven ability to drive financial and operational improvement in complex environments.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Leadership & Turnaround Strategy
- Assess the organization’s current financial position, including cash flow, accounts receivable, cost structure, and reimbursement performance
- Lead the development and execution of a comprehensive financial recovery plan
- Establish clear milestones, accountability, and reporting cadence to track progress
Executive & Board Partnership
- Serve as a strategic advisor to the CEO on financial and operational matters
- Deliver transparent, timely, and actionable financial reporting to the Board of Directors
- Build credibility and confidence with internal and external stakeholders
Cash Flow & Revenue Optimization
- Stabilize cash flow and liquidity through revenue cycle improvements and disciplined expense management
- Identify and implement opportunities to optimize reimbursement and payer contracts
Revenue Cycle Management
- Oversee and strengthen revenue cycle operations, including billing, collections, and denial management
- Drive measurable improvements in key performance indicators
Healthcare Reimbursement Oversight
- Provide leadership on reimbursement strategies, including Medicare and rural health programs such as Critical Access Hospitals (CAH) and Rural Health Clinics (RHC)
Organizational & Operational Leadership
- Evaluate and strengthen the finance and revenue cycle teams
- Identify talent gaps and build a sustainable, high-performing organizational structure
- Partner with operational leaders to prioritize and execute high-impact improvement initiatives
Stakeholder Engagement
- Collaborate with lenders, regulatory agencies, and community partners to support the organization’s financial recovery and long-term viability
- Represent the organization in financial discussions with external stakeholders
Technology, Analytics & Reporting
- Enhance financial systems, reporting, and forecasting capabilities
- Improve data visibility to support informed decision-making
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required
- CPA preferred (or required, depending on candidate profile)
- Minimum 10 years of progressive financial leadership experience, including at least 5 years in a CFO or senior finance leadership role
- Direct experience in rural healthcare environments, including Critical Access Hospitals (CAH) and/or Rural Health Clinics (RHC)
- Strong knowledge of Medicare reimbursement and rural healthcare financial dynamics
- Demonstrated success in financial turnaround, cash flow stabilization, and operational improvement
