Position Details
General Statement
Reporting directly to the Vice President for Communications and serving as a member of the University Communications leadership team, the Chief Marketing Officer leads MSU's central marketing functions and works collaboratively with colleges, departments and units across the university. The position is responsible for ensuring MSU's marketing strategies, campaigns, brand standards, digital marketing efforts, social media presence, trademarks and licensing activities reflect and advance Montana State University's mission as a land-grant university.
The Chief Marketing Officer is the senior steward of the MSU brand. The position oversees the development and implementation of comprehensive marketing strategies that communicate MSU's value to students, families, faculty, staff, partners, retailers, licensees and communities across the state and beyond. This includes communicating MSU's role in expanding access to higher education, supporting student success, serving Montana communities, as well as how the university's efforts strengthen the state's workforce and economy.
The Chief Marketing Officer works closely with the Office of Admissions and other university units to develop marketing strategies that support enrollment, retention, student success and institutional reputation. The position uses market research, analytics and campaign performance data to guide strategy and improve results.
This role oversees brand strategy, marketing strategy, digital marketing, social media, trademarks and licensing, brand standards and relationships with local, state and national retailers and licensees. The position supervises eight staff members.
Montana State University operates under a shared services model for communications, with University Communications staff, services and budget centralized for maximum effectiveness and efficiency. The Chief Marketing Officer works with other University Communications leaders to continually strengthen the value, responsiveness and effectiveness of that model.
