Position Overview
Central Maine Healthcare is seeking a Chief of Anesthesia to join its team serving the Central Maine region. The Chief of Anesthesia provides strategic, clinical, and administrative leadership for the Department of Anesthesiology. This role is responsible for ensuring the delivery of high-quality, safe, and efficient anesthesia services while promoting excellence in patient care, physician engagement, quality improvement, education, and regulatory compliance. The Chief serves as a member of the hospital's medical leadership team and collaborates with multidisciplinary departments to achieve organizational goals.

Responsibilities:
Clinical Leadership
- Provide oversight of all anesthesia services, including operating rooms, labor and delivery, procedural areas, and critical care support.
- Ensure high standards of patient safety and quality of care.
- Establish and maintain evidence-based clinical protocols and practice guidelines.
- Participate in direct patient care as needed.
Administrative Leadership
- Lead the planning, organization, and management of the Department of Anesthesiology.
- Develop departmental goals, policies, and strategic initiatives aligned with organizational objectives.
- Monitor departmental performance using quality, safety, operational, and financial metrics.
- Oversee physician scheduling, staffing, and resource allocation.
Quality and Patient Safety
- Champion continuous quality improvement initiatives.
- Monitor clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction.
- Lead morbidity and mortality reviews and root cause analyses.
- Ensure compliance with accreditation, regulatory, and patient safety standards.
Staff Leadership and Development
- Recruit, mentor, and retain anesthesiologists and anesthesia providers.
- Conduct performance evaluations and support professional development.
- Foster a collaborative, respectful, and high-performing departmental culture.
- Promote physician wellness and engagement.
Financial and Operational Management
- Develop and manage departmental budgets.
- Improve operational efficiency and operating room utilization.
- Collaborate with hospital administration on resource planning and capital expenditures.
- Support revenue cycle optimization and documentation compliance.
Collaboration
- Work closely with surgeons, nursing leadership, perioperative services, critical care teams, and hospital executives.
- Serve on medical staff committees and leadership councils.
- Promote interdisciplinary communication and teamwork.
Qualifications:
- Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from an accredited institution.
- Current unrestricted medical license.
- Board Certification in Anesthesiology.
- Eligibility for hospital credentialing and privileges.
- DEA registration (as applicable).
- Minimum of 7–10 years of clinical anesthesiology experience.
- At least 3–5 years of progressive leadership or management experience.
- Demonstrated success in quality improvement, physician leadership, and departmental management.
