Role Summary

Elevate your laboratory career as the Chief Technologist of Cytology. In this pivotal leadership role, you will oversee the daily operations of a sophisticated Cytology department, ensuring the highest standards of diagnostic accuracy and regulatory compliance. You will serve as a hands-on clinical expert—screening gynecological, non-gynecological, and fine needle aspiration (FNA) specimens—while simultaneously leading a team of Cytotechnologists. This position is ideal for a seasoned professional who balances technical mastery of the Bethesda system with the leadership skills necessary to manage a high-volume hospital laboratory.

Key Duties:

  • Departmental Leadership: Supervise Cytotechnologists, develop staff schedules, assign daily workloads, and manage comprehensive departmental records.

  • Clinical Excellence: Screen and examine gynecological and non-gynecological specimens, including body fluids, exudates, and scrapings.

  • Pathology Collaboration: Identify and present slides with unusual cytomorphology to Pathologists for definitive examination and consultation.

  • FNA Support: Assist physicians directly with fine needle aspiration (FNA) procedures and oversee the collection of specimens from patients.

  • Regulatory Oversight: Maintain all laboratory records in strict accordance with the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) requirements and compile annual statistics.

  • Technical Quality: Utilize ThinPrep technology and ensure the laboratory adheres to the Bethesda system for cytology reporting.

  • Operational Management: Oversee the maintenance of the Cytology section and ensure all performance and safety standards are met.

Required Qualifications

  • Licensure: Current New York State (NYS) License as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist or Cytotechnologist.

  • Education: Bachelor of Science degree with ASCP Registry and/or a degree from a Certified Cytology School.

  • Clinical Experience: Minimum of 3 years of experience screening gynecological, non-gynecological, and fine needle aspiration (FNA) specimens.

  • Leadership Experience: Prior supervisory or management experience in a laboratory setting is required.

  • Technical Certification: ThinPrep Certification required.

  • Health & Safety: Flu Vaccine required (No exceptions).

Desired Qualifications

  • Expertise: Deep familiarity with the Bethesda system for Cytology reporting.

  • Professionalism: Proven ability to lead and mentor a team while maintaining clinical throughput.

  • Longevity: A stable work history demonstrating commitment and professional growth in a permanent role.
