About the Role:

The Child Advocate works in Victim Support Services at Center for Hope's Children's Advocacy Center by aiding in the support and nurturance of children and youth visiting the center through engaging youth in mindful activities before and after their forensic appointments. The Advocate is the primary support person for children visiting the center and is responsible for providing an optimal environment and utilizing a child-friendly, trauma-informed and trauma responsive lens in their approach. The Child Advocate promotes effective coping and healthy development through education, play, mindfulness practices, and therapeutic activities.

Please note: The Child Advocate assists with the Facility Dog program and will receive training on interacting with our companion therapy dog. The Child Advocate will work regularly with the Facility Dog.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Normalize the environment to reduce stress and increase comfort for clients. Engage youth in specialized, developmentally appropriate activities such as meditation, breathing exercises, expressive arts, and mindfulness. Guide children through the process.
  • Provide Child Advocacy services, including preparation and debriefing for forensic interviews, forensic medical exams, and other Center for Hope appointments. Engage youth in the playroom and maintain clean, safe, and nurturing family and waiting room environments.
  • Collaborate with Center for Hope teams and multidisciplinary partners. Assist with student and volunteer experiences, as well as special events, holiday activities, and donations.
  • Support the development and implementation of Child Advocacy materials and practices. Maintain knowledge of child development, positive behavioral management techniques, and current best practices through training, research, and consultation. Create individualized activities to promote positive experiences for youth.
  • Assist with the Facility Dog program. Maintain materials such as brochures and forms, document client interactions in the case tracking system, complete outcome measurement surveys for youth ages 10+, and perform clerical duties as needed.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Education: AA degree in child related or similar field preferred
  • Experience: 1-2 years of formal experience with children

Grant supports rate up to $23/hour, dependent on experience and internal equity.
