As part of the university, the Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center is a federally funded center that operates exemplary elementary and secondary education programs for deaf and hard of hearing students as well as national outreach programs which develop and disseminate innovative curricula, instructional techniques, and products nationwide, and provide information, training, and technical assistance to parents and professionals serving children from birth through age 21.

      Summary:

      Child Care Assistants demonstrate ability to plan age-appropriate activities for children. Job responsibilities include providing snacks, assigning roles and responsibilities for each child, and being creative with activities.Assistants are responsible for ensuring the safety of all students, maintaining discipline at all times and are able to react quickly and appropriately in crisis situations.Must be vigilant in monitoring students, a self-starter, and be agile.


       

      Job Description:

      Qualifications:

      • High School diploma or GED required

      • Must have at least one year of experience working with children in an educational setting or child care setting

      • Knowledge and understanding of young children and behaviors of children at different age groups

      • Excellent interpersonal skills required

      • Fluency in American Sign Language

      Employment Information:

      • Employment Dates:  August 24, 2026 – June 11, 2027

      • Required Orientation Training:  dates to be announced

      • All employees hired must undergo and pay for a background investigation if selected for the job and must be cleared before starting first day on the job. 

      • Current fee for the investigation can range from $35.50 to $135 depending on your location

      • Background Check and Gallaudet Student Conduct Office Records must be in good standing

      • Compensation:  $18.40 per hour

      • Work Hours: Tuesdays / Wednesdays   5:30pm – 8:30pm and Saturdays 9:30am – 12:30pm

      • On-Call as needed


       

      Other Important Information:

      • The successful candidate will undergo a background check that must be cleared prior to working at Gallaudet University.
