Child Life specialist

Job Summary

The individual in this role is a vital member of the healthcare team, responsible for planning, implementing, and evaluating programs that address the specialized non-medical needs of hospitalized children and their families.

Job Responsibilities

• Assess the individual needs of children and families to plan developmentally and therapeutically appropriate activities, making adjustments as necessary to help them cope with the hospital environment.
• Document assessments, observations, and recommendations for the plan of care in the medical record.
• Orient and supervise volunteers in their roles in providing ongoing play and developmental activities.
• Participate in marketing, public relations, and community-based activities related to children's health.
• Support research and the implementation of evidence-based practices.
• Maintain educational and clinical expertise by reviewing professional materials, attending conferences and workshops, and networking with other programs to stay current with trends in the field.
• Exercise independent judgment in making decisions involving non-routine problems under general supervision.
• Work directly with patients and customers, as well as with internal staff and other healthcare professionals.

Required Skills & Experience

• 0 to 1 year of experience in child development.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Preferred Skills & Experience

• Experience in a healthcare setting.

Schedule Notes

Day shift position. Minimum salary offered with eligibility for clinical ladder and shift difference if applicable. Relocation assistance available with a one-year commitment.

Required Certifications

• Certified Child Life Specialist (CCLS) or one year of work experience as a CLS, OR completion of 600 hours and internship ready to take the exam.

Education Requirements

• Must have a Bachelor's degree in child life, child development, or a related field.
• Must have completed a 600-hour child life internship or fellowship.
• Licensure/Certification: Certified Child Life Specialist (CCLS) or must complete certification requirement within one year of employment.
