    Description

    Job Title: Child Nutrition/Custodial Personnel Exemption Status/Test: Nonexempt

    Reports to: Cafeteria Manager, Administration Date Revised: 7/9/2026

    Dept./School: Child Nutrition/Custodial

    Primary Purpose:

    Work under moderate supervision to prepare and serve appropriate quantities of food to meet menu requirements. Maintain high standards of quality in food production, sanitation, and safety practices. Assist with custodial services for all district facilities. Establish & follow routine cleaning schedules and maintenance procedures to maintain a high standard of safety, cleanliness, and efficiency of building operations and grounds.

    Ability to understand and execute written and verbal instructions

    Ability to read and understand instructions for cleaning, maintenance, and safety procedures

    Working knowledge of kitchen equipment and food production procedures

    Knowledge of cleaning, maintenance, and safety procedures

    Ability to operate large and small kitchen equipment and tools

    Ability to perform basic math

    Ability to perform minor repairs

    Ability to operate cleaning equipment and lift heavy equipment

    Ability to properly handle cleaning supplies

    Effective organizational, communication, interpersonal, and problem solving skills

    Experience:

    Experience in cafeteria and custodial services preferred, but not required

    Major Responsibilities and Duties:

    Food Preparation and Serving

    • Prepare quality food according to a planned menu of tested and uniform recipes.
    • Serve food according to meal schedules, departmental policies, and procedures, and practice and promote portion control and proper use of leftovers.
    • Store and handle food items and supplies safely and according to established procedures. Maintain a clean and organized storage area.

    Safety and Sanitation

    • Operate tools and equipment according to prescribed safety standards, and follow established procedures to meet high standards of cleanliness, health, and safety.
    • Keep garbage collection containers and areas neat and sanitary.
    • Correct unsafe conditions in work area and promptly report any conditions that are not immediately correctable to supervisor.
    • Maintain personal appearance and hygiene.

    Other

    • Handle and record cashier functions accurately.
    • Help record food requisitions and order necessary supplies.
    • Maintain daily food preparation records.
    • Promote teamwork and interaction with fellow staff members.
    • Complete annual continuing education requirements.
    • Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.

    Custodial

    • Work cooperatively with principal and superintendent, as well as other custodial workers, to ensure a high standard of safety, cleanliness, and efficiency of building operations.
    • Establish and execute work schedules and procedures for the routine/regular care of campus/district facilities and special projects.
    • Inspect all district buildings and facilities and schedule cleaning and repairs, as needed.
    • Attend & execute training related to cleaning procedures, safe and proper use/storage of chemicals and equipment, asbestos management, pest control, employment compliance, and other required trainings.
    • Maintain safety standards in accordance with federal, state, district, and insurance regulations.
    • Ensure established safety procedures are followed including lifting and climbing. Ensure tools and equipment are operated and chemicals handled according to established safety procedures.
    • Correct unsafe conditions in work area and promptly report any conditions that are not immediately correctable to supervisor.
    • Follow established procedures for locking, checking, and safeguarding facilities.
    • Recommend replacement of equipment when necessary.
    • Conduct inventory of equipment and supplies and maintain accurate records. Order tools, equipment, and supplies as needed.
    • Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents as required including maintaining accurate information for payroll reporting.

    Cleaning

    • Move/deliver district furniture, equipment, and other heavy or bulky materials.
    • Implement and maintain established cleaning schedules that include emptying waste and cleaning floors, dry erase boards, windows, furniture, equipment, and restrooms.
    • Keep school building and grounds, including sidewalks, driveways, parking lots, and play areas, neat and clean.
    • Comply with local laws and procedures for storage and disposal of trash.
    • Maintain an inventory of cleaning supplies and equipment and order additional supplies as needed.

    Maintenance and Repair

    • Assist with lunchroom set up, including arranging of tables and chairs.
    • Inspect building exterior and interior, playground equipment, and grounds; perform maintenance and minor repairs.
    • Make minor building repairs as needed and report needed major repair to supervisor.
    • Perform preventative maintenance to ensure the comfort, health, and safety of students and staff.
    • Regulate heat, ventilation, and air conditioning systems to provide appropriate temperatures and ensure economical usage of fuel, water, and electricity.
    • Assist in setting up facilities for regular and special events and move furniture or equipment within building as directed by principal/supervisor.

    Safety

    • Assume responsibility for opening and closing building each school day. Check daily to ensure that all exit doors are locked and all panic bolts are working properly during hours of building occupancy. Ensure that procedures for locking, checking, and safeguarding facilities are followed.
    • Inspect machines and equipment for safety and efficiency.
    • Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties, including lifting and climbing. Operate tools and equipment according to established safety procedures.
    • Correct unsafe conditions in work area and promptly report any conditions that are not immediately correctable to supervisor.

    Tools/Equipment Used: Standard large and small kitchen equipment and tools including electric slicer, mixer, pressure steamer, deep-fat fryer, sharp cutting tools, stove, oven, dishwasher, and food/utility cart, buffer, stripper, wet and dry vacuum cleaner, shampooer, lawn mower, edger, and weed eater; small hand tools; small power tools

    Posture: Prolonged standing; frequent kneeling/squatting, bending/stoop, pushing/pulling, and twisting

    Motion: Continual walking; frequent climbing (ladder), grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension, reaching/overhead reaching

    Lifting: Heavy lifting and carrying (45 pounds and over) frequently

    Environment: Work outside and inside commercial kitchen environment; exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, extreme humidity, noise, vibration, microwaves, biological hazards (bacteria, mold, fungi), chemical hazards (fumes, vapors, gases), electrical hazards; work with hands in water; work around machinery with moving parts; work on slippery surfaces, work on slippery or uneven walking surfaces; frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, dust, toxic chemicals and materials; regularly work irregular hours; occasional prolonged hours

    Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress
