    JOB TITLE: CHILD NUTRITION WORKER/CASHIER

    JOB SUMMARY: Assist Child Nutrition Building Lead to ensure the efficient operation of a kitchen site for the purpose of providing balanced, nutritious meals for students. Perform cash handling and quantity preparation of menu items following federal, state, and district guidelines while maintaining an organized and sanitary work and service area. Primary duties include: food preparation and serving; cashiering; clean-up and sanitation; collecting and disseminating data; and providing information; providing input to building lead. May assist with: inventory control; equipment oversight; training new staff and substitutes; cross-training department staff; oversight of student assistants

    CERTIFICATIONS: Valid Food Worker Card ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

    • Provide timely information to designated overseer to ensure accurate and appropriate daily/weekly/monthly food and non-food deliveries. Receive, promptly and properly store, and maintain inventory control of all food and non-food items.
    • Set up serving carts and warming ovens for meal services. Prepare, pan, and cook daily food items to proper internal cooking temperatures to provide safe, attractive, and quality meal entrees. Promote and ensure documentation of internal cooking temperatures and monitor hot holding temperatures throughout meal service.
    • Maintain full condiment containers and salad bar items. Set up utensils, napkins, trays, and other serving items and refill as needed.
    • Plan, organize, and maintain meal line traffic flow to ensure serving students in a timely manner.
    • Serve appropriate quantities from standardized recipes to students and staff in a friendly and pleasant manner; assist students with the assembly of meals as needed.
    • Clean serving and meal areas before, during, between, and at the end of meal service(s).
    • A ssist other child nutrition staff and substitutes assigned to the work site to include proper food handling, cashiering procedures, professional behavior, etc.
    • Wash dishes, trays, utensils, and pans at the end of the day; clean and sanitize all kitchen surfaces; store food and equipment properly.
    • Clean refrigerators/walk-ins, milk coolers, ovens, dishwasher, and storage areas on a regular basis.
    • Collect and send kitchen linens (i.e., hot pads, towels, etc.) for laundering as needed to maintain cleanliness for daily service
    • Practice and ensure that proper HACCP (Hazard Analysis & Critical Control Points) procedures are followed to include stock rotation and utilization of inventory on a first-in, first-out (FIFO) system.
    • Report meal counts, including discrepancies, and inventory lists to designated overseer in a timely manner.
    • Perform cashier and/or point-of-sale duties. Run day-end reports, count money, prepare daily deposit, and daily activity reports.
    • Upon request, and with mutual employer/employee agreement, fill in for Child Nutrition Building Lead.
    • Serve on various district committees and/or departmental work teams.
    • Model and promote appropriate and cooperative behavior, including protecting confidential information consistent with district ethical guidelines.
    • Attend workshops, classes, conferences, meetings, and/or other training to meet requirements and to enhance knowledge of child nutrition services and collaborate with colleagues.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS: This job is generally performed in an indoor, high-volume, school kitchen facility with accompanying noise from equipment and students, temperature extremes, interruptions, and some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness. The usual and customary methods of performing the job functions require the following physical demands: exposure to heat from ovens, burners, steam tables and dishwashing equipment; exposure to cutting and slicing equipment and machines with moving parts; exposure to cleaning and sanitizing products; sitting, standing and walking for prolonged periods of time; regular and repetitive wrist/arm/elbow movements; frequent stooping, heavy lifting, grasping, carrying and climbing; some bending, twisting, reaching, carrying, pushing or pulling; hand and finger dexterity; agility and speed. The job incumbent will be required to concentrate on detail and work in front of a computer terminal on a regular basis.

    REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of: district, state, and federal guidelines, regulations, policies, procedures, and requirements pertaining to child nutrition services; proper food handling techniques; kitchen safety and sanitation procedures; proper heavy lifting techniques; basic keyboarding; basic math, including calculations using addition/subtraction, multiplication/division, fractions/decimals; basic computer and internet use. Skills to: maintain an organized work area; be dependable and flexible; maintain effective communication and good working relationships with supervisor, co-workers, staff, students and community; operate equipment found in a commercial kitchen; serve proper quantities and present food in an attractive manner; model cooperation and implementation of program requirements in a professional manner; present a professional and positive image of the department and District; accurately gather, store, retrieve and provide data in a timely manner. Ability to: multi-task with the potential to upgrade skills to meet changing job conditions, regulations and requirements; understand written procedures and solve practical problems; follow verbal and written directions and procedures; meet "offer vs serve" meal pattern requirements; accurately count and be responsible for daily deposit monies; work with minimal supervision; use discretion and sound judgment; adhere to best safety practices; maintain confidentiality; be well groomed and have a neat appearance; maintain regular and punctual attendance; delegate responsibilities to staff to promote cross training in all areas of the food service environment.

    WORK RELATIONSHIPS: Reports to Child Nutrition Manager. Seeks guidance from Child Nutrition Building Lead. Daily collaborative interaction with child nutrition staff assigned to the building/site, other building staff and students. Regular and collaborative interaction with building principal. Occasional interaction with community members.
