Unit School of Medicine Department Psychiatry

Mission or Goal of the Unit

Established in the early 1960s, the Virginia Treatment Center for Children (VTCC) is the Child and Adolescent Division of the VCU Medical Centers Department of Psychiatry and the pediatric psychiatric service of the comprehensive array of services offered by Childrens Hospital of Richmond at VCU. VTCC combines a multi-prong mission of Clinical Care, Teaching, Research, and Advocacy. Collaboration to impact a wide array of behavioral health and social determinants of health.

VTCC operates a new 2018 inpatient and outpatient facility incorporating the latest technology and family-friendly environment, utilizing a 32 inpatient acute bed service, an expanded multi-disciplinary outpatient service, an innovative mental health resource center to assist pediatricians and families, and opportunities for collaborative research and training.

 

Chief Purpose of this Position

The Department of Psychiatry seeks a Child Psychiatrist for the support of the clinical and teaching missions, primarily with opportunities for research and community collaboration to advance access to critical demand child psychiatry services and training.

Clinical work includes a focus on outpatient and periodic consultation-liaison services to pediatric medicine-specialties and the pediatric emergency department. Candidates are expected to perform inpatient rotational coverage and on-call shared with a team of Physicians. The candidate will provide teaching to medical students, residents, fellows, and trainees with opportunities to consult-train in community settings and collaborate with allied professionals with an interdisciplinary team approach. The position is flexible to address candidates interests and professional development with regard to treatment focus and scholarly pursuits.

 

Position Responsibilities

  1. Teaching - Teach child and adolescent psychiatry to medical students, residents, fellows, nurse practitioners, graduate trainees.
  2. Clinical - Provide psychiatric assessment and treatment to primarily in an outpatient setting and consultation-liaison services to Pediatric medicine-ED through onsite and telepsychiatry. Participates in Division-wide rotational inpatient coverage and on-call services.
  3. Service - Departmentally assigned committees.
  4. Other - Attend Grand Rounds, participation in CME activities, professional development activities, Good Citizenship activities.

 

Clinical Assignment and Other Responsibilities

Clinical assignment and other responsibilities are determined to mutually meet the needs of the Department and the candidates interests and strengths.

 

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • MD Candidates will be Board Eligible
  • Board Certified in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and have demonstrated experience with pediatric patients and their families, fostering an interdisciplinary team approach.
  • Must be licensed or eligible for licensure to practice in Virginia.
  • Clinical Experience in outpatient CL and inpatient settings. Populations include ages 3-17, including intellectual disabilities, autism spectrum, and mental health.
  • Experience in teaching within an academic setting.
  • Comfortable with mentoring trainees.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism, and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences or a commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience and desire to work in an academic medical setting.
