Choir Teacher 2026-2027

Primary Purpose:

Assist with the management of the assigned campus choir program in alignment with Melissa ISD Fine Arts standards and expectations. Provide students with appropriate learning activities and performance opportunities designed to promote intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. Assist with development and sustaining of a comprehensive choral program that demonstrates excellence in instruction and UIL performance while fostering student leadership, character development, and musical achievement. Ensure students acquire the skills and competencies necessary to function successfully in society.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university

Valid Texas teaching certificate

Demonstrated success at UIL CSR

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Knowledge of music theory, conducting, harmony, and vocal production

Knowledge of curriculum and instruction

Knowledge of University Interscholastic League (UIL) rules

Ability to manage budget and personnel

Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior

Ability to interpret data

Strong communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills

Experience:

A minimum of 3-5 years as a choir director with consistent sweepstakes awards.

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Instructional Strategies

  • Provide high-quality instruction and leadership to choir students by modeling excellence, fostering a

culture of respect and belonging, and guiding students toward mastery of tone, pitch, rhythm,

tempo, harmony, and expressive performance. Lead vocal ensembles and soloists in a manner that

promotes confidence, discipline, and artistic growth.

  • Establish and communicate clear performance and academic expectations that promote

responsibility, integrity, and student accountability. Monitor and verify student eligibility in

accordance with district and UIL standards.

  • Ensure equitable access to meaningful performance opportunities, including concerts, UIL

participation, and other extracurricular events that reflect the district's commitment to excellence

for all students.

  • Plan, coordinate, and execute rehearsals, formations, competitions, and performances that are

organized, developmentally appropriate, and aligned to district fine arts standards.

  • Develop and implement instructional plans aligned to the district curriculum and Texas Essential

Knowledge and Skills. Maintain written evidence of preparation and incorporate accommodations to

meet the diverse needs of all learners.

  • Utilize research-based instructional strategies, differentiated learning approaches, and appropriate

materials and technology to support student engagement and achievement. Deliver instruction in

accordance with Texas Education Agency guidelines, board policies, and administrative regulations.

  • Collaborate with special education staff and other support personnel to ensure appropriate

modifications and accommodations are implemented in alignment with Individual Education Plans

and student support plans.

  • Work collaboratively with campus and district staff to align instructional goals, strengthen vertical

and horizontal program coherence, and support the overall vision of Melissa ISD Fine Arts.

  • Analyze student achievement data and program outcomes to evaluate effectiveness, drive

continuous improvement, and ensure the choir program reflects a culture of growth, reflection, and

renewal.

Student Growth and Development

  1. Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal testing.

  2. Be a positive role model for students and support mission of the school district.

Classroom Management and Organization

  1. Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional

development of students.

  1. Manage student discipline in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.

  2. Accompany and supervise students on out-of-town trip activities and arrange transportation, lodging,

and meals for out-of-town events.

  1. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, material, and facilities.

Communication

  1. Establish and maintain a professional relationship and open communication with parents, students,

colleagues, and community members.

Budget and Inventory

  1. Assist with development and administration of budget based on documented program needs and ensure that operations are

cost effective, and funds are managed wisely.

  1. Assist with coordination fundraising activities and manage funds.

  2. Maintain current inventory of all fixed assets related to the program.

  3. Oversee cleaning, repairing, and storing of all equipment.

  4. Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents required.

Professional Growth and Development

  1. Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills.

  2. Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.

  3. Comply with federal and state laws, State Board of Education rule, UIL rules, and board policy in the

choir area.

Personnel Management

  1. Assist with recruitment, selection, training, supervision, and evaluation of assistant choir directors.

Other

  1. Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.

Salary

$58,000 to $70,000 commensurate with experience;

$225 per month district contribution toward health insurance;

$20,000 district paid life insurance policy
