Description
The Role:This is an entry-level supervisory position for paraprofessional staff responsible for performing a variety of technical and paraprofessional duties of a complex nature and supervising customer service staff.
The ideal candidate will have a minimum of an Associate Degree in Library Science or a related field and two years of professional library work experience.Salary:
This position is:
- FLSA non-exempt, and will earn overtime for any hours worked over 40 in a week.
- This position is a Grade 316 with an hourly salary between $27.5797 - $41.2798.
Note, this salary range is effective 6/27/2026.

Holiday, Vacation, and Sick Leave:
City of Glendale Regular status positions offer:
10.5 paid holidays per year, and full-time employees are also granted an additional 12 hours of holiday special leave per calendar year to celebrate their cultural or religious holidays
Vacation leave accrues at:
5.33 hours per pay period (138 hours/17.25* days per year)
Increases to 6.12 hours per pay period after 5 years
Then caps out at 7.6 hours per pay period after 10 years of service
Sick leave accrues at 4.4 hours per pay period (114 hours/14.25 days* per year)
Days per year estimates are based on an 8-hour work day
Retirement:This position participates in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS).
- Contribution is mandatory, and deducted every pay period
- The current contribution rate is 12.00%
Essential Functions
- Supervises Library Assistants, Public Service Assistants, Security, temporary staff and volunteer staff customer service staff.
- Assists with the recruitment of assigned staff under the direction of the Library Operations Senior Supervisor.
- Directs, supervises, motivates, and evaluates assigned staff under the direction of the Library Operations Senior Supervisor.
- Assists library customers by checking library materials in and out, issuing library cards, taking fees and payments for lost or damaged materials, updating library customer records, and placing holds.
- Balances receipts, balances and reconciles cash amounts; maintains and processes cash records according to established procedures.
- Provides information in person, by email, and on the telephone on policies, procedures, local and system wide services, programs and materials.
- Answers directional, informational, readers advisory, and basic reference questions.
- Uses library related computer application programs, personal computer application programs, and computer equipment on a daily basis.
- Provides basic instruction in the use and operation of library reference tools, on-line computer catalog, electronic databases (OCLC) and other library resources.
- May represent the Library and Community Services at outreach events within the community and schools.
- Assists in developing, implementing and revising policies and procedures; recommends and implements new techniques, programs and services.
- Researches and resolves patron complaints and problems regarding library materials and services.
- Evaluates damaged library materials for repair or replacement and authorizes adjustments.
- Prepares bibliographies, bulletin boards, displays, and exhibits.
- Represents the library at professional meetings and conferences to provide and obtain materials and services.
- May perform cataloging, report writing, collecting and reporting of statistical data, preparation of archival finding aids and outreach services, library tours and exhibits.
- Evaluates donated materials and determines disposition.
- Keeps current on new library materials and technologies.
- May open or close the public library building and work evenings or weekends as needed.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications/Special Requirements/Success Factors
Associate Degree in Library Science or a related field and two years of professional library work experience.
Any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. One year of relevant experience may be substituted for each year of required education.
Knowledge of:
- Library policies, procedures, principles, functions, terminology and materials
- Books, authors and materials in functional area
- Methods of circulation, collection management principles and practices, and deselection procedures
- Basic supervisory practices
- Dewey Decimal System, Library of Congress subject headings,
- Multi-media equipment used in a library OCLC
Skill in:
- Use of personal computers and on-line computer automated library systems
Ability to:
- Lead effectively, train and develop staff
- Communicate effectively verbally and in writing
- Establish effective working relationships with City staff and the general public
- Handle sensitive customer situations, resolve problems, and maintain a high level of customer service
- Learn and use automated library systems and databases
- Follow detailed procedures such as standard library cataloguing and filing rules
- Any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying.
