Job Summary:

The City of Napa is hiring a City Attorney to serve as the chief legal advisor to the City Council. The successful candidate will have strong municipal law expertise, sound judgment, and a highly collaborative management style. The City Attorney will oversee the full scope of legal services for the City, including civil litigation, administrative hearings, and risk management.

Benefits:

Job Responsibilities:

  • Provide sound legal advice and support to City officials
  • Collaborate with the City Council, executive team, and departments to implement policies and ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations
  • Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of legal documents, including contracts, ordinances, resolutions, and development agreements
  • Represent the City in legal proceedings and administrative matters
  • Ensure legal compliance across all City operations through proactive counsel, education, and policy development
  • Serve as a resource and educator to City staff and officials through in-house training and legal updates

Ideal Candidate:

  • Strong municipal law expertise and sound judgment
  • Highly collaborative management style
  • Ability to balance legal rigor with practical problem-solving
  • Experience in a municipal setting in the active practice of law, including litigation
  • Active membership in the State Bar of California and admittance to practice before all State and Northern Federal District Courts in California
  • Ability to lead and manage the City Attorneys Office, including strategic oversight of legal operations

Qualifications:

  • Equivalent to graduation from a college or university with a Juris Doctorate degree
  • Five years of experience in the active practice of public law in the State of California
  • Extensive experience in a municipal setting in the active practice of law, including litigation
  • Active membership in the State Bar of California and admittance to practice before all State and Northern Federal District Courts in California
