City Service Worker (CSW) Paramedic Intern

Trainee: $22.8456 per hour

Up to 20 hours per week

The mission of the Pasadena Fire Department is to protect life, property, and the environment from the effects of fires, medical emergencies, and hazards; we engage the community in our mission through progressive community outreach.

The Pasadena Fire Department is seeking individuals who can embody accountability, integrity, and flexibility. Come join a renowned Fire Department and a World-Class City, with exposure to dynamic EMS, fire, and rescue calls for service within a diverse culture, community and workforce.

Individuals selected for this position will be sponsored to participate in an upcoming Paramedic training program starting in January 2027. The City will pay the cost of the program. Additionally, all City Service Workers (CSW) will work 20 hours per week with PFD. The 20 hours will consist of riding as the 3rd person on a Pasadena Fire Rescue Ambulance, training to learn department operations and culture, as well as tutoring sessions to assist with the Paramedic curriculum.

The entire program is expected to last approximately 11 months.

After successful completion of paramedic school (National Registry and Local Accreditation), the CSW may be eligible to advance directly to the Chief's interview for a Firefighter Trainee.

Essential Functions

The CSW Paramedic Intern with the Fire Department must be able to perform essential functions, including:

  • Respond to emergency calls, which may include medical, fire, rescue, hazardous materials or other emergencies.
  • Administer first aid and assist in medical incidents in accordance with LA County protocols.
  • Participate in training, practice and be familiar with the operations of all fire department medical equipment, vehicles, motorized equipment and specialized tools used in suppression and rescue operations performed by the department.

Qualification Guidelines

  • Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older at the time of appointment.
  • Possession of a valid Class C Drivers License.
  • Must possess a California-issued EMT certification or a valid National Registry-issued EMT certification (must be attached to the application during submission).
  • Must be on the Firefighter Candidate Testing Center (FCTC) Statewide Eligibility List written examination of 70% or higher, EMT, and CPAT dated July 2, 2025 - July 2, 2026. All certificates or licenses must be attached to your FCTC registration.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 6 months experience working as an EMT on a 911 Ambulance or working in an Emergency Room setting.
  • Preference will be given to Pasadena residents. Proof of residency (valid California drivers license or identification card or copy of utility bill) will be required at the time of applying and will also be verified at the time of appointment.
  • Completion of California accredited Fire Academy.
  • Preference will be given to applicants involved in Pasadena Fire Department programs: (Fire Explorers or EMS Reserve Program, Local Fire Academy Sponsorship)
  • Possession of a California State Fire Fighter I certificate or above.
  • Possession of an Associate of Arts or Associate of Science in Fire Science or above.

  • STRUCTURED INTERVIEWS-

  • Most desired qualified candidates best meeting the department needs will be invited for interviews.

  • As a result of the interview process, an eligible list of candidates will be established.

  • High scoring interview candidates will be invited to continue in the selection process.

  • Candidates who are not invited to continue, but pass the interview, will be placed on an eligible list for one year for possible future consideration.

  • VETERANS PREFERENCE POINTS-

  • Three points will be added to the final qualifying score for veterans who served at least one year of active military duty and submit documentary evidence of honorable discharge with online application.

  • BIDDLE-

  • Top scoring candidates on interviews may be invited to proceed to City paid Biddle test.

  • BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION AND FINAL SELECTION -

  • Candidates will be required to undergo a thorough background and medical review including psychological screen and drug test.

  • Candidates must pass the paramedic entry examination for final hire.

  • Candidates must be non-smoker and remain non-smoker for the duration of employment.

  • EMT certificates must stay in good standing for the duration of employment.

  • Out-of-state candidates must apply for a state of California Drivers License when the conditional offer of employment is made.

Special Requirements

The Paramedic Intern is an FLSA Non-exempt and At-Will classification.

  • Must pass paramedic entry exam for final hire.

  • CSW Paramedic Interns may be eligible to advance directly to a Chief's Interview at a future Firefighter Trainee recruitment and selection process, as long as the following requirements are met:

  • Receive a passing score on the Biddle that is no more than 1 year old at the start date of the Pasadena Firefighter Trainee Fire Academy.

  • Successfully completes Paramedic School and possesses the NREMT Paramedic Certification as condition on continued employment.

  • Please note that you must be active on the FCTC Statewide Eligibility List (SEL) and with a passing score on the written examination of 70% or higher for the next 2027 Firefighter Trainee recruitment process.

Failure to meet qualifying standards during this period may result in separation from employment.

FICA Alternative Plan:

The City of Pasadena does not participate in Social Security. In lieu of Social Security, employees are automatically enrolled in the FICA Alternative plan administered by Public Agency Retirement Services (PARS) upon date of hire. Employees contribute 7.5% of the gross earnings on a pre-tax basis to the plan.
