Civil Design Engineer

Positive Overview

The Civil Design Engineer performs design and technical work for residential, commercial, public, and utility infrastructure projects. This position applies engineering principles to develop calculations, plans, specifications, reports, and construction documents while coordinating with project managers, principal engineers, and other technical staff.

Reports to: President with direct supervision from Principal Engineer

Duties and Responsibilities

Technical Responsibilities

  • Prepare site grading, roadway, utility, stormwater, and site development designs.
  • Perform stormwater conveyance, quantity, and quality modeling.
  • Design sanitary sewer, water, and stormwater conveyance systems.
  • Prepare erosion and sediment control (TESC) plans.
  • Prepare engineering calculations, technical memoranda, specifications, cost estimates, and supporting documentation.
  • Coordinate engineering designs with survey, planning, permitting, and other project disciplines.
  • Review engineering plans and supporting documents for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with applicable codes and standards.
  • Participate in internal design reviews and incorporate resulting comments into project deliverables.
  • Maintain organized electronic project files in accordance with company standards.
  • Occasionally visit project sites to observe construction progress and verify conformance with plans and specifications.

Project Support

  • Coordinate assigned work with project managers and other technical staff.
  • Assist with scheduling and achievement of established milestones.
  • Support budget objectives through efficient completion of assigned work.
  • Communicate work status and identify potential schedule or technical issues.

Professional Development

  • Expand engineering expertise through increasingly complex assignments.
  • Participate in professional and industry organizations.
  • Provide day-to-day guidance to Civil EITs as appropriate.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Skills and Specifications

  • Applies sound engineering judgment and solution-oriented problem-solving skills.
  • Maintains current knowledge of applicable engineering codes, regulations, and design standards.
  • Produces accurate, high-quality engineering documents.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in applicable engineering design software.
  • Uses Microsoft Office Suite effectively.

Education, Experience, and Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering.
  • Three (3) or more years of civil engineering design experience.
  • Site development experience preferred.
  • EIT certificate required.
  • Continued progress toward Professional Engineer (PE) licensure is expected.

Physical Considerations

  • Ability to operate standard office equipment, including a personal computer, printer, copier, and telephone.
  • Ability to perform repetitive, fine hand and arm movements associated with computer use and document handling.
  • Ability to occasionally travel to project sites, client meetings, and jurisdictional offices.
  • Ability to traverse active construction sites while wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when required.
