Job Title: Civil Engineer in Training (EIT)
Job Description
This role focuses on leading and supporting the design of a wide range of civil engineering projects, including land development and site design, transportation and roadway improvements, and stormwater management and utility infrastructure. You will prepare detailed engineering plans, specifications, and technical reports while performing advanced engineering calculations and cost estimates. The position offers the opportunity to work closely with clients, contractors, and regulatory agencies to ensure compliance with applicable codes and standards, and to contribute to project planning, scheduling, and quality control. As your experience grows, you will also take on mentoring responsibilities and help develop the broader project team.
Responsibilities
- Lead and assist in the design of civil engineering projects, including land development, site design, transportation improvements, roadway projects, stormwater management systems, and utility infrastructure.
- Prepare comprehensive engineering plans, specifications, and technical reports that meet applicable codes, standards, and client requirements.
- Perform advanced engineering calculations, including grading, drainage, stormwater, and utility design, as well as detailed cost estimates for civil projects.
- Utilize AutoCAD Civil 3D and other design and modeling tools to develop accurate, constructible civil site and roadway designs.
- Coordinate project details with clients, contractors, and regulatory agencies to ensure timely approvals and compliance with local, state, and federal requirements.
- Support and participate in project planning, scheduling, and quality control processes to help deliver projects on time and within scope.
- Collaborate with internal team members, including drafters and other engineers, to produce complete, high-quality design packages.
- Prepare to mentor junior staff as your experience grows, providing guidance on design practices, drafting standards, and project workflows.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of design standards, templates, and workflows to enhance efficiency and quality across projects.
- Assist with or support permitting efforts by preparing design documentation and coordinating with agencies involved in municipal, transportation, and land development projects.
Essential Skills
- 3-5 years of civil engineering design experience in a consulting or professional services environment.
- Experience in civil engineering design, including land development, site design, civil site design, roadway design, grading, drainage, stormwater, wastewater, and municipal engineering.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D for civil design, drafting, and preparation of construction documents.
- Experience with civil site layout, roadway geometry, and utility design in an engineering or drafting capacity.
- Ability to prepare engineering plans, specifications, and technical reports with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Ability to perform advanced engineering calculations and develop detailed cost estimates for civil infrastructure projects.
- Strong communication skills, including the ability to coordinate effectively with clients, contractors, and regulatory agencies.
- Demonstrated leadership potential and the ability to manage multiple priorities and projects simultaneously.
- Capability to participate in and support project planning, scheduling, and quality control processes.
- Fundamental understanding of local, state, and federal permitting processes for civil and land development projects.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Familiarity with hydrology and hydraulic modeling software to support stormwater and drainage design.
- Experience using GIS tools to support mapping, analysis, and design coordination.
- Experience with municipal, transportation, or land development projects, including site development and roadway improvements.
- Experience with civil CAD workflows, including drafting standards, sheet production, and coordination with multidisciplinary teams.
- Ability and interest in mentoring junior staff and contributing to team development as experience increases.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to maintain quality across multiple concurrent projects.
- Interest in continuous professional development and staying current with civil engineering design tools and best practices.
- Eligibility for or possession of an Engineer in Training (EIT) credential is preferred.
Work Environment
This position is primarily office-based, working in a professional consulting environment focused on civil engineering and design. You will use modern computer hardware and software, including AutoCAD Civil 3D and other modeling and GIS tools, to produce detailed civil design documents and plans. The role involves regular collaboration with internal team members and coordination with external clients, contractors, and regulatory agencies, typically during standard business hours. Pay and Benefits
