Job Summary
The Civil Engineer I performs entry-level professional engineering work supporting the planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of municipal infrastructure projects, including transportation systems, water and wastewater utilities, stormwater management, and floodplain programs. Working under the guidance of experienced engineers, this position assists with project reviews, engineering analyses, plan evaluations, regulatory compliance, technical reporting, and construction oversight. The role collaborates with internal departments, external agencies, consultants, developers, and the public to support project implementation and ensure adherence to engineering standards and municipal regulations. The Civil Engineer I applies engineering principles, analytical skills, and technical software tools to develop solutions, support project delivery, and provide technical information while contributing to the City''s commitment to customer service, innovation, and continuous learning.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties and responsibilities are illustrative of the primary functions of this position and are not intended to be all inclusive.
- Performs work in support of municipal engineering projects and under the direction of experienced Engineers which may include an essential combination of the following:
- Reviews and coordinates review of project plans/designs for compliance with engineering principles, federal, state, county and, city regulations; prepares recommendations for approval or denial.
- Coordinates with other departments or agencies to facilitate conflict resolution, project implementation and compliance to standards.
- Performs work in support of multiple engineering and construction projects.
- Compiles, researches and analyzes reports, records, drawings and other data to support the planning, design, and/or evaluation of projects or programs.
- Prepares or modifies reports, specifications, plans, construction schedules, environmental impact studies, and/or designs for projects.
- May inspect sites to monitor progress and ensure conformance to engineering plans, specifications, and construction and safety standards.
- Serves as a technical information resource for the public, consultants and developers, City boards and departments, and City Council regarding specific projects or general engineering questions; may prepare presentations and written materials.
- Participates in staff, project review, and policy meetings.
- May develop and operate complex computer simulation models.
- May administer or monitor project budget.
