Why This Role Matters

Los Angeles Unified is the second-largest school district in the nation. Its Facilities Services Division plans, builds, and modernizes the campuses where hundreds of thousands of students learn every day. As the licensed Civil Engineer on the Maintenance & Operations A/E team, you'll be the District's civil engineering authority on school site projects. You'll certify designs, direct consultants, and shape the standards every District project is built to.
This is not a production-drafting role. You'll own the civil engineering side of projects from feasibility through permit closeout. Your work will touch everything from grading and storm drainage to ADA curb ramps and bus drop-off zones that affect how students and families reach school safely.

What You'll Do

Lead civil engineering on District projects

• Perform highly complex civil engineering work for the planning, design, and construction of District facilities and site improvements.
• Help define and review Project Requirement Document (PRD) scope of work and schedule, including interim housing requirements.
• Apply civil engineering principles to project scope development, budget preparation, design review, and technical coordination with District and external professional staff.
• Direct and review site development studies to determine feasibility and estimated cost of site grading, street improvements, utility improvements, and other civil requirements tied to property acquisition and development.

Serve as the District's technical authority

• Provide technical direction to commissioned architects and consulting civil engineers on District policies, standards, and design guidelines. This covers grading, paving, fencing, parking layouts, streets, storm drainage, sewer systems, and other site improvements for new construction and major alterations.
• Review civil plans, specifications, and related documents from architects and consultants. Check them for conformance with District standards, applicable codes, and project requirements. Identify conflicts with other architectural and engineering features and direct or recommend revisions.
• Provide professional certification of civil engineering designs and documents for District and commissioned projects.
• Develop, update, and maintain District civil engineering standards, guidelines, and specifications to ensure code and safety compliance and to promote quality, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness.

Guide people and contracts

• Provide technical direction to Civil Engineering Unit personnel preparing and reviewing scope documents, topographic surveys, design drawings, specifications, and technical documents.
• Obtain and manage contracts and task orders for civil engineering, land surveying, and related professional services.

Support construction, permitting, and real estate

• Resolve civil engineering issues during construction and advise contractors, architects, engineers, District inspectors, and project staff on requirements and field conditions.
• Coordinate with the City of Los Angeles and consultants to obtain review and approval of off-site improvements adjacent to school sites, including B-Permit and A-Permit work such as sidewalks, driveways, bus drop-offs, and ADA curb ramps. Manage permit closeout.
• Support the Real Estate Department on property transactions. This includes preparing and reviewing legal descriptions, determining easements, updating parcel maps, and closing street vacations.

Minimum Requirements

All of the following are required. Applications without them will not be considered.

• License: A valid Professional Engineer license in Civil Engineering issued by the California State Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, and Geologists
• Education: A bachelor's degree in civil engineering from a recognized college or university
• Experience: At least eight (8) years of full-time, paid professional experience in civil design on commercial or public agency projects
• Software: Experience in AutoCAD design, plus proficiency in office software (Word, Excel, Adobe, etc.)

Preferred Qualifications

• Civil design experience on educational facilities (K 12 or higher education)
• Experience with City of Los Angeles B-Permit and A-Permit processes
• Experience reviewing consultant plans and managing professional services contracts or task orders
• Experience with legal descriptions, easements, parcel maps, or street vacations
