General Job Description for: Civil Foreman

This is skilled supervisory work in the construction of civil and heavy construction projects including earthwork, utilities, grading, concrete, and site development. This individual is responsible for supervising field crews engaged in the installation, construction, and maintenance of civil infrastructure projects.

Supervision is exercised over a crew of skilled and unskilled workers, or multiple small crews assigned to various phases of civil construction projects. Work is performed under the general direction of a Superintendent and is subject to periodic review for results obtained, safety compliance, production, and adherence to company policies.

Job Duties and Tasks for: Civil Foreman

1. Plans, assigns, schedules, and supervises work of laborers, equipment operators, and truck drivers engaged in civil construction activities.

2. Supervises one or more crews engaged in grading, excavation, utility installation, and site development.

3. Oversees installation of underground utilities, backfilling, compaction, and related civil construction activities.

4. Ensures proper layout, elevations, and adherence to project specifications and drawings.

5. Instructs and trains employees in safe operation of equipment, tools, and job techniques.

6. Maintains production schedules and ensures work is completed safely and efficiently.

7. Prepares daily reports, time records, and other required job documentation.

8. Coordinates with Superintendent, vendors, inspectors, and subcontractors.

9. Performs related work as required.

Skills Needed for: Civil Foreman

1. Thorough knowledge of civil construction methods, utilities, grading, and sitework.

2. Strong understanding of construction equipment, materials, and tools.

3. Knowledge of occupational hazards and jobsite safety practices.

4. Ability to interpret and work from blueprints, plans, and specifications.

5. Ability to layout, direct, and supervise civil construction activities.

6. Strong leadership skills with ability to supervise crews effectively.

7. Ability to communicate clearly with Superintendent, crew members, and vendors.

8. Ability to maintain organization and production tracking on job sites.

Knowledge, Experience, Education Required for: Civil Foreman

1. Knowledge of materials, methods, and tools used in civil construction.

2. Knowledge of construction math including measurements, elevations, and layout.

3. Knowledge of reading and interpreting construction drawings and plans.

4. Strong understanding of safety procedures and jobsite compliance.

5. Knowledge of equipment operation and maintenance principles.

6. High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent work experience.

7. 5+ years civil construction experience required.

8. Prior foreman or supervisory experience strongly preferred.
