    Position Information

    Working Title Class A CDL Instructor Position Status Full Time Department Continuing Education General Summary

    The Class A CDL Instructor will teach students the knowledge and skills necessary to pass the commercial vehicle knowledge and skills examinations required to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL).

    Specific Position Duties

    • Provide classroom, range, and behind-the-wheel instruction for students pursuing a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
    • Teach students the safe operation of Class A commercial vehicles.
    • Instruct students in pre-trip and post-trip inspections, basic vehicle control, backing maneuvers, defensive driving techniques, and driving safety techniques.
    • Maintain comprehensive knowledge of applicable state and federal regulations governing commercial motor vehicles.
    • Evaluate student performance and progress using Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) and state-approved testing standards.
    • Maintain accurate student attendance, training records, evaluations, and required program documentation.
    • Demonstrate proper vehicle operating procedures and ensure students adhere to all safety regulations.
    • Work outdoors in varying weather conditions while conducting behind-the-wheel instruction.
    • Perform physical activities associated with instruction, including climbing, bending, lifting, pulling, and demonstrating vehicle operations.
    • Develop and distribute course materials, including syllabi, assignments, grading criteria, and instructional resources.
    • Deliver course content in a clear, organized, and engaging manner using appropriate instructional methods.
    • Provide academic support and respond to student questions through classroom instruction, office hours, electronic communication, and other appropriate means.
    • Foster positive working relationships with students, faculty, staff, industry partners, and community organizations.
    • Assist with student recruitment, program marketing, outreach activities, and workforce development initiatives.
    • Participate in college meetings, professional development, campus events, and community service activities.
    • Teach courses at various times, locations, and instructional delivery methods, including face-to-face, hybrid, or other approved formats, as assigned.
    • Comply with all college policies and procedures, as well as applicable local, state, and federal regulations.
    • Other duties assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Three (3) or more years of commercial driving experience operating Class A commercial motor vehicles.
    • Valid Texas Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
    • A minimum three-year safe driving record.
    • Ability to meet and maintain Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) medical certification requirements.
    • Strong communication and instructional skills.
