Job Summary
Coordinates instructional and laboratory support activities for the engineering program, working closely with faculty to develop, prepare, and deliver instructional resources, demonstrations, and hands-on learning experiences. Provides professional and technical support for engineering courses requiring knowledge of engineering principles, electronics, laboratory equipment, and fabrication technologies. Maintains and troubleshoots instructional equipment, supports laboratory operations and safety compliance, assists with course implementation, and serves as a technical resource for faculty and students in support of engineering education.

Responsibilities
Essential Functions
- Installs, inspects, tests, calibrates, adjusts, troubleshoots, and performs major repairs on engineering equipment, instrumentation, and laboratory systems.
- Collaborates with engineering faculty to develop, implement, and document instructional programs, laboratory exercises, demonstration models, and laboratory procedures that support course and program learning outcomes.
- Designs, fabricates, tests, modifies, and documents equipment, prototypes, fixtures, and systems used in engineering laboratories, instructional activities, and student projects.
- Manages the Engineering Makerspace within the Technology and Engineering Center, including oversight of equipment, operations, scheduling, safety protocols, and user access.
- Supervises and coordinates the work of laboratory support staff, student employees, and other assigned personnel.
- Coordinates laboratory operations, including equipment maintenance, inventory control, storage, organization, and preparation of instructional materials and laboratory spaces.
- Evaluates equipment and technology needs; researches equipment specifications; and makes recommendations regarding the purchase, replacement, and upgrade of laboratory equipment, software, and instructional resources.
- Provides training and technical guidance to faculty, staff, and students in the safe and effective use of specialized engineering software, fabrication technologies, tools, and equipment, including CAD/CAM applications, 3D printers, laser cutters, CNC equipment, and related technologies.
- Maintains computerized inventory, equipment records, maintenance logs, and technical documentation for laboratory equipment and facilities.
- Performs the duties of an Instruction & Classroom Support Technician 2, including providing routine laboratory support, equipment maintenance, and instructional assistance.
- Serves as the coordinator of assigned engineering laboratories and makerspace facilities, overseeing equipment usage, access, scheduling, and utilization of laboratory and instructional spaces.
- Monitors compliance with laboratory safety procedures and provides instruction and supervision to students regarding the safe and proper use of tools, machinery, equipment, and laboratory facilities during classes and open-access laboratory periods.
- Assists faculty and students in troubleshooting technical issues related to laboratory equipment, engineering software, fabrication processes, and instructional technologies.
- Performs other related work of a similar nature and level.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of engineering fabrication, prototyping, and makerspace technologies, including the operation and application of equipment such as CNC machines, laser cutters, and 3D printers.
- Knowledge of electronics, microcontrollers, robotics, mechatronics, and engineering instrumentation used in instructional and laboratory environments.
- Ability to communicate technical information effectively through verbal instruction, written documentation, and interpersonal interactions with students, faculty, staff, and community members.
- Ability to diagnose problems, evaluate alternatives, and develop practical solutions to technical, operational, and instructional challenges.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously, adapt to changing demands, and effectively balance project work with direct support of students and faculty.
- Ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, take initiative, and achieve high-quality results with minimal supervision.

Lead Work/Supervisory Responsibilities
- Oversees regular and work study student employees, including assigning work, providing training and technical guidance, monitoring performance, and ensuring compliance with laboratory safety and operational requirements.
Working Conditions/Environment
- Work is performed in classrooms, engineering laboratories, and fabrication/makerspace environments. The position requires frequent interaction with faculty and students, operation of laboratory and fabrication equipment, and compliance with laboratory safety protocols. Duties may involve standing, lifting equipment and materials, and working with electronics, machinery, and specialized instructional technologies in support of hands-on engineering instruction.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or a related field.
- Two years of full-time experience as an Instruction and Classroom Support Technician 2 or equivalent role.
OR
- Equivalent combination education and experience sufficient for the person to perform the duties.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in a community college, university, or other higher education environment.
- Experience developing and delivering technical training, laboratory instruction, or makerspace orientation programs.
- Experience coordinating laboratory, makerspace, or fabrication facility operations, including equipment scheduling, inventory management, and safety compliance.
- Experience supporting interdisciplinary STEM programs and collaborating with faculty across multiple technical disciplines.
- The ability to take action to learn and grow.
- The ability to take action to meet the needs of others.
Licensure, Certification & Other Necessary Requirements
- Employment contingent upon passing a criminal background check and sexual misconduct review.
- Occasional travel to meetings, conferences and training sessions may be required.
- Current CPR and First Aid Certification or ability to obtain certifications within first 90 days of employment.
Salary
Salary:
- This is a full-time, classified, WFSE (Washington Federation of State Employees) represented position. Salary is Range 47, starting at Step A, $4,300.00 per month with periodic increments to $5,642.00 per month. This amount includes the July 1st, 2026 COLA increase.
Benefits Package:
- The position comes with a full benefit package, including health, dental, life, long-term disability insurance and a retirement plan.
- Accrues 8 hours per month of sick leave and 11.33 hours per month vacation leave with periodic vacation accrual increases based on longevity.
- 11 paid holidays annually.
- 1 personal holiday annually after 4 months of continuous employment.
