Classified Nurse for Consolidated Health Services at Oak Heights Elementary School

EDMONDS SCHOOL DISTRICT February 2024 TITLE: Classified Nurse Page 1 Employee Group: Professional Technical Employees Reports to: Health Services - Program Manager Supervises: None FLSA Status: Non-exempt Compensation Level: Level F JOB SUMMARY: Works under the direction of the Health Services Manager and in collaboration with Certificated School Nurses, provides direct and indirect care in accordance with the Nurse Practice Act, professional standards of care, state regulations and standards. Works as a member of the building and district health services team to coordinate and carry out health care services. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Assesses, identifies, implements, and evaluates the care plan and coordinates care delivery health concerns with the Certificated school nurse. Monitors students in a variety of settings (e.g. school, on buses, field trips etc.) for the purpose of providing assigned student(s) first aid and appropriate care according to their Individual Health Plan (IHP) and condition.
2. Manages and delivers routine and emergency care for medically fragile students, as directed by a certificated school nurse, monitors and provides appropriate treatment to students who are medically complex or have health concerns.
3. Performs procedures within their scope of practice defined by laws and the standards of professional nursing organizations.
4. Completes nursing tasks including but not limited to testing of diabetic student blood glucose level and administering insulin injections as necessary; assessing and treating severe asthmatics; performing procedures such as changing dressings and catheterization; performing suctioning of tracheostomies; administering medications; or other procedures.
5. Follows physician orders regarding medication and medical treatment at school of medically fragile and medically complex students; reports results to appropriate parties, including doctors, certificated school nurses, and parents.
6. Communicates student health concerns that may impact learning to the Certificated school nurse and parents/guardians; uses electronic health records and other web-based software applications for charting, data collection, and health assessment processes.
7. Collaborates with the Certificated School Nurse, parents, students, health care providers, and other agencies for the purpose of assuring needed treatment, securing information and complying with legal requirements.
8. Provides support to the Certificated School Nurse when appropriate to assure data entry for health care records (e.g. medical alerts, medication entry, mandated screening, immunization records, etc.) for the purpose of providing information required by legal and professional standards.
9. Assists with health screening, for the purpose of referring to medical conditions and/or providing appropriate care.
10. Promotes self-care skills for medically fragile students. Supervises student self-care at school; teaches self-care skills, considering student's developmental level, independent care ability, and the stability of the student's medical condition.

12. Provides for the essential care needs of students in the absence of the certificated school nurse.
13. Provides support to the Health Services department on projects as necessary. Responds to specific student health care needs by designated certificated school nurses.
14. Performs professional nursing tasks as needed, including emergency care services for both staff and students.
15. Performs other related duties as assigned. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS Education and Experience: Associates Degree in Nursing from an accredited school of nursing. Licenses/Special Requirements: Current Washington State R.N. license Current CPR and First Aid certification. Required to travel to and from various District sites to provide nursing services. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of: Health care and registered nursing practices and principles, including state and federal regulations affecting licensure. Laws and regulations for medication and treatment orders, and nursing delegation. Universal precautions, containment of blood, and disposal of sharps. Communicable diseases; ability to learn and comply with policies and guidelines regarding reporting of communicable diseases. Treatment of medically complex conditions such as insulin-dependent diabetes, allergic responses, seizures, and asthma or other respiratory conditions. Child and adolescent growth and development. Cultural competency and cultural humility principles. Skill in: Utilizing multiple technical and nursing tasks Performing medical procedures. Operating standard office equipment including pertinent software applications. Preparing and maintaining accurate records. Adhering to safety practices. Microsoft Office Suite and Google Suite applications, software, and tools. Utilizing electronic health records. Ability to: Utilize medical equipment in a school environment (such as hoyer lifts, insulin pumps, nebulizers, and suction equipment). Exhibit judgment, accept responsibility, be dependable, exemplify good personal health practices and mental health attitudes. Interpret students' health needs to parents and school staff reflecting culturally, and linguistically diverse communities. Comply with policies and procedures for delivery of health care services. Understand and execute verbal and written instructions, policies, and procedures. Communicate effectively with students, parents, and the public using tact and diplomacy. Maintain the confidentiality of sensitive information in compliance with federal and state regulations and District policies. Work effectively and cooperatively as a member of a team. Learn new computer systems and software. Remain flexible and adapt to the needs of multiple school assignments. Work independently with minimal supervision. Prioritize assignments to complete tasks. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS One year of nursing work experience preferred. Bachelor's Degree in Nursing preferred. WORKING CONDITIONS Exposed to blood or other potentially infectious diseases carried by children. Regularly works in indoor conditions; experiences interruptions and inflexible deadlines; noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, but can be abnormally loud on occasion. Required to deal with distraught and/or angry individuals. PHYSICAL DEMANDS Frequently required to sit, move about, hear and speak, and be visually observant of patient behaviors. Frequently required to use fine hand and finger movements (keyboarding); must be able to stoop, crouch, bend, kneel, and stand on feet for extended periods of time; must regularly lift and carry items weighting up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift, restrain, or move up to 100 pounds (with assistance as required)- most typically to intervene in student safety issues.
