Job Description:
POSITION SUMMARY:
The District is seeking qualified candidates for a 1.0 FTE Library Media Specialist position. The district reserves the right to fill this position with one full-time candidate (1.0 FTE) or with two qualified candidates in a shared position (0.6 FTE and 0.4 FTE), based on the operational needs of the district and candidate qualifications. Position allocation and benefit eligibility for split-FTE positions will be governed by the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreement.
CERTIFICATION & REQUIREMENTS:
- Education: Master's degree in Library Science, Educational Technology, or related field preferred.
- Certification: Valid Connecticut State Department of Education (CSDE) certification as a Library Media Specialist (Endorsement 062 or 048) required.
- Background Check: Successful completion of background screening pursuant to C.G.S. § 10-221d.
PERFORMANCE & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Plans and administers the school library media program, working cooperatively with the principal, curriculum coordinator, classroom teachers, and paraeducators who may be supporting in the library.
- Provides developmentally appropriate instruction in library and information literacy skills to elementary students in grades PK-6.
- Teaches students to locate, evaluate, select, use, and communicate information effectively and responsibly.
- Plans and implements library media policies.
- Encourages students and teachers to take full advantage of the library media center and its resources.
- Interprets the school library media program to students, faculty, administration, and the community.
- Evaluates, selects, and requisitions new library media materials and equipment.
- Informs teachers, staff members, and students about library materials and assists in their appropriate selection.
- Maintains a comprehensive and efficient system for processing and cataloging all library media materials and equipment, and instructs teachers and students in the use of the system.
- Collaborates with local libraries to arrange for inter-library loans of materials for teachers and students.
- Promotes appropriate conduct of students using library media facilities.
- Helps students develop habits of independent reference work and skills in using reference materials for assignments.
- Works cooperatively with teachers in presenting and discussing materials with classes studying specific topics.
- Counsels and provides reading guidance to all students across all levels of learning ability.
- Promotes the acquisition and use of electronic information services.
- Prepares and administers the media center budget in consultation with teachers, the curriculum coordinator, and the principal.
- Supervises volunteers in the performance of their duties.
- Carries out other related duties as assigned by the principal.
PHYSICAL & ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS:
- Ability to navigate school grounds and library spaces.
- Ability to lift, transport, and arrange books, media materials, and technology equipment weighing up to 25-30 lbs.
- Capacity to operate technology devices, cataloging hardware, and digital media tools.
- Ability to actively supervise student behavior and safety within the facility.
SALARY RANGE: $47,272 - $99,407 (Commensurate with experience and subject to Collective Bargaining Agreement)
